Metrology is the science of measurement and its application. It has three subfields: scientific metrology which establishes measurement standards and units; applied metrology which ensures suitable measurements in manufacturing; and legal metrology which regulates measurements for public protection. Metrology is important for manufacturing accuracy and consumer and public confidence. Instruments must be periodically calibrated against more accurate standards to ensure measurement accuracy in manufacturing. The two main measurement systems are the English system based on inches and the metric system based on meters, with millimeters most common in machining.

CHAPTER 1 :
BASIC PRINCIPLES OF METROLOGY INTRODUCTION OF METROLOGY
Metrology is of fundamental importance in industry and
trade – not only from the point of view of the consumer but also for those involved in manufacturing. Both groups must have confidence in the accuracy and reliability of the measurements upon which they depend. Within the manufacturing process, to ensure the accuracy of measuring instruments, it is essential that they should be periodically calibrated against more accurate standards. Metrology is a very broad field and may be divided into three subfields: (i) Scientific or fundamental metrology concerns the establishment of measurement units, unit systems, the development of new measurement methods, realization of measurement standards and the transfer of traceability from these standards to users in society. (ii) Applied or industrial metrology concerns the application of measurement science to manufacturing and other processes and their use in society, ensuring the suitability of measurement instruments, their calibration and quality control of measurements. (iii) Legal metrology concerns regulatory requirements of measurements and measuring instruments for the protection of health, public safety, the environment, enabling taxation, protection of consumers and fair trade. Basic units measurement system (i) The English system (inches)
That system of measurement is based on
the inch. When dealing with inches in the machining industry, fractional and decimal measurement and math are both very common (ii) The Metric System Or SI
The meter is the basic unit used in the
metric system of measurement, but the millimeter is most commonly used in the machining industry
