 September 15 is celebrated every year in India as Engineer''s Day to commemorate the

birthday of the legendary engineer Sir M. Visvesvaraya (1861-1962).
 This year the 50th Engineers’ Day will be celebrated all over the country and
 the National Council of the Institution has selected the theme as “Role of Engineers in a
Developing India
 ”to mark the occasion.
 Why only on birthday of M Visvesvaraya ?
 Because “jal hii to kal hiii”--------- Internationally recognised for his genius in harnessing water
resources, he was responsible for successful design and construction of several river dams,
bridges and implementing irrigation and drinking water schemes all over India.
 K.R. Sagar dam and its adjoining Brindavan Gardens, turn-around of the Bhadravati Iron and
Steel Works, setting up of the Mysore Sandalwood Oil Factory and the founding of the Bank of
Mysore.
1.In ecnomy of india:

 Engineers belong to that sector classified as ‘Services’ in the national economy. It

accounts for about 53 percent of GDP. In 2001 it recorded a negative growth of 0.5
percent according to the Central Bank Report but not in the areas in which engineers
were involved. For example, transport and communications recorded moderate positive
growth rates with the telecommunications sector growing vigorously and showing a 25.5
percent growth in 2001. In an area that impacts significantly on the interests of engineers,
