6AN8 Aerodynamics Lab: Aerodynamics of Racing Cars

Aerodynamics play an important role in racing car design. Various modifications are made to racing cars to reduce drag, generate downward lift, and increase performance. These include streamlined body designs, spoilers, airfoils/wings, grille shutters, expertly designed underbodies, and drag reduction systems. Formula One cars make extensive use of aerodynamic modifications like canards, specially positioned front and rear wings, and optimized airflow around the body and helmet.

Aerodynamics of
Racing Cars
What is a racing Car ?

 Race car is designed or modified to be used in contest of

speed with other vehicles.

 Difference between race car and normal car is the lack of

passenger seating, working doors and other features that
increase overall weight of vehicles.

 First race occurred in 1890s , winner was decided on the basis of

shortest time to complete the race.
Importance of Aerodynamics in
Racing Cars
1.Drag Reduction
2.Downward lift generation
3.Increase Performance

modification
Aerodynamic modifications in
Racing Cars
1. Streamline Body Design

Audi A6
2. Spoiler :

Car with Spoiler:

1. High pressure on upper side
2. Enlarged wake region results in more drag
Wake Region
(Drag)
3. Airfoil / Wing
Racing Car with Airfoil / Wing
1. High pressure on upper side
2. Reduced wake region
3. Lesser drag as compare to spoiler
Rear Wing

4. Grille Shutters (Smart Intakes)

 The shutters open and close automatically to control

airflow

 Reducing aerodynamic drag and improving fuel

efficiency

BMW-i8
5. Expertly Designed Underbody
6.Drag Reduction System

Race
Mode

Normal Mode
A multi piece duct assembly is
integrated into the front hood area
to optimised cooling flow and
reduce drag
Application in Formula One Cars

1. Canard structures

2. Front and back wings are on opposite sides of the centre of gravity

3. Aerodynamically designed helmet of f1 car racers

4. Thin Boundary Layer formation over the body

Optimised airflow to maximise the down ward force and to
reduce drag
Aerodynamic Design of Different
Racing Cars
 Streamlined Vehicle Design [Audi A6: 2011-present (Cd 0.26)]

 Aero-optimised alloy wheels [BMW i8: 2014 (Cd 0.26)]

 An expertly sealed underbody and all manner of air-channelling furrows [Mazda3

Sedan: 2012-present (Cd 0.26)]

 Active grille shutters mounted in the front bumper [Ford Mustang (Cd 0.26)]
