Group 1: The Nigerian Natural Gas Industry in Perspective

This document discusses the Nigerian natural gas industry. It notes that Nigeria has significant natural gas reserves and is a major global producer, but it flares a large amount of gas. It faces challenges around exploration focus, agreements with companies, and incentives. However, there are future projections that investments from companies like Shell and Total will help develop gas infrastructure and increase production and exports through pipelines.

GROUP 1

THE NIGERIAN NATURAL GAS

INDUSTRY IN PERSPECTIVE
OUTLINE
INTRODUCTION
PRODUCTION
CHALLENGES
FUTURE PROJECTIONS
INTRODUCTION
• NIGERIA IS THE NINTH LARGEST HOLDER OF GAS RESERVES IN THE WORLD
AND LARGEST IN AFRICA
• NIGERIA HAS ABOUT 188 TCF UP TO 660TCF OF NATURAL GAS RESERVES AS
AT JANUARY 2006 MORE THAN ALGERIA,EGYPT AND LIBYA.
• THERE ARE MORE THAN 50 BN DOLLARS WORTH OF INVESTMENT
OPPORTUNITIES IN THE BUSINESS OF PROCESSING AND DISTRIBUTION OF
GAS.
• NIGERIA FLARES MORE NATURAL GAS THAN ANY OTHER COUNTRY IN THE
WORLD, WITH 43 PERCENT OF ITS TOTAL ANNUAL NATURAL GAS
PRODUCTION BEING FLARED. NNPC ESTIMATES THAT NIGERIAN FLARED
NATURAL GAS ACCOUNTS FOR APPROXIMATELY 20 PERCENT OF THE
WORLD TOTAL.
PRODUCTION
• IN 2013 PRODUCTION FELL BY 10% TO 1.35TCF
BECAUSE OF SUPPLY DISRUPTIONS AND A
TEMPORARY BLOCKADE ON NIGERIANS LNG
SHIPMENTS, WHICH ALSO LED TO A
CORRESPONDING FALL IN A EXPORTS AND , TO
A LESSER EXTENT, DOMESTIC CONSUMPTION
BECAUSE OF THIS NIGERIA COULD NOT IMPORT
NATURAL GAS.

• IN 2014, NIGERIA’S GAS PRODUCTION GREW TO

ITS HIGHEST LEVEL ON RECORD OF 1.55TCF
BECAUSE OF FEWER SUPPLY DISRUPTIONS.

• NIGERIA ENJOYED A 602BCF OF NATURAL GAS

IN 2014, ALMOST 40% OF ITS PRODUCTION
CHALLENGES
• LACK OF FOCUS ON WHERE EXPLORATION SHOULD TAKE PLACE
• INADEQUATE AGREEMENTS WITH INTERNATIONAL AND DOMESTIC ENERGY
COMPANIES

• POOR INCENTIVES TO INCREASE GAS RESERVES

• DOWNWARD PRESSEURE ON INTERNATIONAL GAS PRICES WHICH IS
AFFECTING INDUSTRY PROFITABILITY

• A LOT OF GAS IS HELD BACK, AS WELL AS PRODUCTION IN PARTS OF

NIGERIA BECAUSE FACILITIES HAVE NOT BEEN BUILT TO DEVELOP THE
RESOURCE AND DISTRIBUTE IT TO HOMES,BUSINESS AND FACTORIES.
FUTURE PROJECTIONS
• AS OF 7TH NOVEMBER 2017, MOST OF THE DEVELOPMENT ON THE WAY;

• SCHLUMBERGERIS PROVIDING ALMOST $700M TO OFFSHORE FIELDS THAT

HAVE NOT JUST OIL BUT SUBSTANTIAL GAS RESERVES.

• FRANCE’S TOTAL HAS SIGNED A GAS SUPPLY AGREEMENT WITH THE GAS
AGGREGATION COMPANY OF NIGERIA AND GREENVILLE OIL AND GAS FOR
THE CONSTRUCTION OF A $500M LIQUIFIED NATURAL GAS PLANT
• ROYAL DUTCH SHELL’S NIGERIAN BUSINESS HAS SIGNED A $300M
AGREEMENT WITH SHOELINE ENERGY TO DEVELOP,MARKET AND
DISTRIBUTE NATURAL GAS.

• THE WEST AFRICAN GAS PIPELINE; THE FINAL DECISION OF THE WEST
AFRICAN GAS PIPELINE WAS SIGNED ON 16TH DECEMBER 2004.THE INITIAL
CAPACITY UTILIZATION OF THE PIPELINE WHICH IS 200MMSCF/D IS
EXCPECTED TO INCREASE TO ABOUT 460MMSCF/D BY 2026.

• THE TRAN SAHARAN GAS PIPELINE RUNNING FROM NIGERIA TO ALGERIA IS

UNDER CONSIDERATION. THE OBJECTIVE IS TO MAKE NIGERIAN PIPED GAS
AVAILABLE TO EUROPE
