Shanthana Cpi Final Version

The document discusses different types of water supply systems including raw water, fire water, and cooling water supply. It describes cooling water systems which circulate water to remove heat from processes and equipment. There are two main types of cooling water systems - open recirculating systems which use evaporation to expel heat, and closed recirculating systems which circulate water without air contact. Key components of cooling water systems include cooling towers, basins, pumps, water exchangers, and water sources.

SUPPLY
COOLING WATER SUPPLY
Cooling water systems remove heat from process steams and equipment by circulating
water.

cooling water system is used for cooling the various places of equipment in the facility in
a closed cooling system

water used as a main cooling medium

once through cooling system
• Use large volumes of water and typically discharge the once-through
water directly to waste.
• Evaporation is negligible, so no significant change in water chemistry
occurs.
• Once-through cooling problems
 Corrosion
 Scale or other deposition
 Fouling
Open recirculating
• Open to atmosphere

• Heat expelled through the process of evaporation.

Close recirculating

• Water circulates in a closed cycle and is subjected to alternate

cooling and heating without air contact
• Heat, absorbed by the water in the closed system.
• Closed recirculating cooling water systems are well suited to the
cooling of gas engines and compressors.

COOLING TOWER
• A cooling tower is a heat rejection device which removes waste heat
to the atmosphere through the cooling of a water stream to a lower
temperature.
• Cooling towers use the evaporation of water to remove process heat
and cool the working fluid.
• Cooling towers remove excess heat from large structures ; heat that is
the product of machinery , processed material , and mechanical
processes.
• The main purpose of cooling tower is to cool the circulating water
used in these structures
According to HowStuffWorks, a cooling tower works by using a
stream of cold water that is run over a heat exchanger to cool down
the individual condenser coils. Some of the water in the stream is
evaporated, which further cools the rest of the stream being run
across the hot equipment. Some cooling towers have a single fluid
circuit, while others use two circuits that never touch.

STEAM/ CONDENSATE
WATER
Produces high quality and dependable steam for energy conservative,
Energy transport, energy generation, turbine drivers, heating and plant
Start-up/shutdown.

Mist is made of tiny droplets of liquid water, not gaseous water

Steam that has been condensed back into water by either raising its
pressure or lowering its temperature

SOURCES OF CONDENSATE
 Condenser hot wells, the bottom part of the condenser
 Steam traps
 boiler
 other place that are using steam
APPLICATION OF STEAM
• Co-generators and power plants use steam to generate electricity via turbines
and gas motors
• the expansion of steam in order to drive a piston or turbine to perform
mechanical work

• used for energy storage, which is introduced and extracted by heat

transfer, usually through pipes

• maximizes the energy efficiency,

• provides heat energy after its use in the electric generation cycle
SAFETY,HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENT
CONCERNS WITH THE SYSTEM
Air pollution
Condense removal
Fuel air explosion
High pressure
High temperature hot spots
Noise level
Steam leaks
Instrument failure
Using water treatment chemicals
