 Sociology is a social science that

studies society and the individual in


perspective of Society. The origins of
Sociology lie in the 19th century but
during the 1960-70s, it became a
major social science subject, taught
in universities and colleges, and
schools. The scope of sociology has
only become more scientific with
time. 1
 Sociology is the study of human
social life, groups and societies. It
is a dazzling and compelling
enterprise, having as its subject
matter our own behavior as social
beings. The scope of sociology is
extremely wide, ranging from the
analysis of passing encounters
between individuals in the street
up to the investigation of world-
wide social processes.

 Auguste Comte believed that ignorance to
comprehend social phenomenon is the root
of all evils and a science of society will
definitely help to maintain peace and
tranquility in the society.
 Inspired by this belief it was in 1838-39 AD
that Auguste Comte, the French philosopher
and the first philosopher coined the term
“Sociology” in his work Cours de philosophic
positive published in the same year in
French. This book was written in six volumes
and it was in the last volume that the word
Sociology was used.

 Comte argued that society was a
“kind of collective organism”
where “families form the cells,
social forces the tissues, while the
state comprises various organs”.

 To be specific Sociology is the study of society,
social life, social change, social functions and the
social causes and consequences of human
behavior. Sociologists investigate the structure of
groups, organizations, and societies and examine
how people interact within these contexts.
 Since all human behavior is social, the subject
matter of Sociology ranges from the intimate family
to the aggressive crowd; from organized crime to
religious movements; from the divisions of race,
gender, and social class to the shared beliefs of a
common culture; and from the Sociology of work to
the Sociology of popular culture and development .

 As a discipline Sociology offers valuable
preparation for careers in journalism,
law, politics, public relations, public
administration, development, projects
etc all of which require investigative
creative skills and the ability to work with
diverse groups. Sociology has numerous
branches or divisions which are as
