Science Week 4 Lesson 16

The document describes an experiment where sugar is heated in a pot and its properties are observed and recorded before and after heating. Heating the sugar causes it to change color, state, and odor, indicating that a chemical change occurred when the sugar melted and caramelized due to the application of heat. The document also provides examples of other chemical changes that occur when materials are heated, such as paper burning, and discusses how changes in color, odor, bubbles, and new products form indicate chemical changes.

Investigating Changes That Happen to

Materials Due to Application of Heat

Elery M. Osite- Pagsawitan E/S Santa Cruz, Laguna
Predict what will happen if we heat
white sugar in a pot?
Fill out the chart below:
Problem Prediction 1 Prediction 2 Prediction3
What will
happen to
sugar inside
the pot when
heated?
Activity
What you need:
2 tablespoon of white refined sugar
Pot
Stove
What to do:
Pour 2 table spoon of sugar in a pot.
Turn on the stove and heat the sugar in low fire.
Observe what happened.
Turn of the stove when the sugar is about to melt.
Record the observation on the chart like this:

Answer the following questions:
a. Did the sugar change its color? Describe it.
b. Did its phase change?
c. What are the indication that the sugar
really underwent chemical change?
d. Is there a new product formed?
e. What were the changes occur in sugar due
to application of heat?
f. Are your predictions correct?
Is formation of bubbles an indication of
chemical change?

When burning a paper what are the new

products formed?
Science Concept:
A chemical change occurs to
mateials when heat is
applied. Change in color,
odor, and taste, production
of smoke, ash, bubbles, fire,
new products and even heat
are the indication of
chemical change.
Direction: Choose the letter of the correct
answer.
1. Aling Maria burns leaves early in the morning in
their backyard. Which of the following is the
indication that material formed into new form
when heat is applied.
a. ash b. fire c. heat d. smoke
2. Which of the following procedures of cooking
banana cue is involves chemical change?
a. Peeling the bananas c. melting the sugar
b. Putting the bananas into stick d. selling them
3. Ash is a new substance formed when_________.
a. Pyrite comes into contact with acid?
b. Food is digested
c. A fruit turns moldy
d. Wood is formed
4. Which of the following activities showed chemical
change due to application of heat.
a. Pancake
b. Cutting of woods
c. Straightening of hair
d. rusting of nail
5. Which of the following is NOT an indication
of chemical change due to application of
heat?
a. Change in color
b. Change in odor
c. Change in taste
d. Change in size
Home Connection:
Materials: cotton, calamansi juice, bond paper,
light bulb, emergency light
What to do:
1. Use calamansi juice and swab of cotton to
write words or pictures on a bond paper.
2. Hold the paper near the light bulb for 3-5
minutes.
Safety Note: Be sure not to hold the paper too
near the heat source as the paper will burn.
Question: What changes happen to materials?
