“Disaster”
- a serious disruption of the functioning of a community or a
society involving widespread human, material, economic or
environmental losses and impacts, which exceeds the
ability of the affected community or society to cope using
its own resources

“Hazard”

- a dangerous phenomenon, substance, human activity or


condition that may cause loss of life, injury or other health
impacts, property damage, loss of livelihood and services,
social and economic disruption, or environmental damage.
Disaster Risk
– the probability that a community’s structure or geographic
area is to be damaged or disrupted by the impact of a
particular hazard, on account of its nature, construction and
proximity to a hazardous area. (ADPC, 2012)
NATURE OF DISASTERS
1. Natural Disasters – originate from the different “forces” of nature
- classified as GEOLOGIC, METEOROLOGICAL/HYDROMETEOROLOGICAL, and
BIOLOGICAL

Examples: Storm surge, earthquake, hurricane, landslide, wildfire, sinkhole, La


Niña, El Niño, Tsunami, Tornado, Thunderstorm, Volcanic Eruption.

2. Human-made Disasters – occur due to people’s actions against human,


material and environment.

Example: Hazardous materials, power service disruption, explosion, civil unrest,


cyber attacks, chemical threat, nuclear blast
ACTIVITY 2:
Identify if the following item is a hazard or a disaster:
1. A super typhoon with storm surge affecting Leyte - Disaster
2. A typhoon passing a remote or unpopulated island - Hazard
3. A flood in a rural area which floods the roads but does not
affect any houses - Hazard
4. A volcano erupting in isolation in the middle of the Pacific
Ocean - Hazard
5. Thunderstorm and lightning in a ricefield of Libacao - Hazard
6. A landslide on the edge of a cliff remote in Capiz
area - Hazard
7. A tsunami wave 5 meters high off the coast of
Japan - Disaster
8. An Earthquake striken in Bohol and Cebu - Disaster
9. A drought in a highland area of Antique - Hazard
10. A forest fire in entire California, USA - Disaster

EVALUATION:

1. Draw the Venn Diagram that shows the relationship


between HAZARD AND DISASTER.

2. Describe the effects of disaster on human’s life.

3. Explain how and when an event becomes a disaster.
