Kaldi, a goat herder in Ethiopia, discovered coffee after noticing his goats became restless after eating red berries from a bush. He reported this to a local monk who made a drink from the berries and found it kept him alert during evening prayers. The monk shared it with other monks, and knowledge of the energizing coffee began to spread. Coffee cultivation and trade began in Yemen in the 15th century before spreading to Persia, Egypt, Syria and Turkey in the 16th century, then to Europe in the 17th century. By the mid-1600s, coffee had made its way to New Amsterdam.

Coffee first was found by a goat herder Legend has it that he noticed an unusual behaviour, a strange
named Kaldi near the Etiopian province. restlessness in his flock after eaten an unkown berries and
leaves

Kaldi reported his findings to the abbot of the local monastery, who made a drink
with the berries and found that it kept him alert through the long hours of evening
prayer..
The abbot shared his discovery with the other monks at the monastery, and
knowledge of the energizing berries began to spread.

Coffee cultivation and trade began on the Arabian Peninsula

Yemeni district of Arabia

Ethiopian and Sudanese traders who traveled to Yemen


over 600 years ago chewed the berries en route to their
destination to survive the harsh difficult journey.

Coffee was not only enjoyed in homes, but also in the many public area—
called qahveh or khaneh which began to appear in all over cities across the Near East.

17th

European travelers to the Near East brought back stories of an


unusual dark black beverage.

Coffee had made its


way to Europe
Coffee began to replace the common breakfast drink
beverages of the time — beer and wine.
There were over 300 coffee houses in London, many of
which attracted like-minded patrons, including merchants,
shippers, brokers and artists.

In the mid-1600's, coffee was brought to New Amsterdam


As demand for the beverage continued to spread, there was fierce
competition to cultivate coffee outside of Arabia.

The Dutch finally successful with their culltivate efforts in Batavia, on the island of
Java in what is now Indonesia.
More coffee plantations were established Robusta coffee (C. canephor var. robusta)
in East Java, Central Java, West Java was introduced to East Java as a
substitute, especially at lower altitudes

The Dutch Colonial Government VOC expanded arabica coffee growing Smallholders throughout Indonesia
initially planted coffee around areas in Sumatra, Bali, Sulawesi and began to grow coffee
Batavia Timor.
