Internet TV Redo

IPTV is a service that allows users to watch television shows and programs over the internet rather than traditional cable or satellite TV. It provides access to catch-up programming from major networks like the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and YouTube. The main advantages are convenience of watching what you want, when you want without being tied to a TV schedule. However, disadvantages include ads and potential buffering issues with slow internet connections. IPTV usage is growing as broadband speeds improve and more content becomes available, but traditional TV is still popular and providers are adapting to compete with internet-based options.

Internet Protocol Television

IPTV

By Charles Prince
What is IPTV ?
 IPTV is a service that most TV companies are now offering.
 IPTV is used for you to catch up or just watch shows that you
have mussed on the TV.
 So far 80% of internet TV is a FREE service.
 IPTV should not be mixed up with Sky+ and other recording
services.
 Many companies now offer an IPTV style service on their TV
boxes e.g. Virgin Media catch up TV on demand.
 Internet TV is mostly watched by a younger audience of 16-
25 year who are at college and university as they have more
time when they are not studying.
IPTV providers ?

The main 4 IPTV providers are YouTube, 4OD, ITV Player and BBC iPlayer.
These are 4 of many IPTV providers. YouTube offers a variety of different
programmes but mainly shows from Channel 4 and FIVE. 4OD providers
programmes from Channel 4, More 4 and E4. ITV player offers
programmes from ITV 1, ITV 2, ITV 3 and ITV 4. BBC iPlayer offers
programmes from BBC 1, BBC 2, BBC 3, BBC HD and all BBC radio
stations. Most IPTV providers will only have a programme available for a
certain time period e.g. BBC iPlayer - 7 days. Most IPTV companies make
money from this FREE service because of adverts before and during the
programme you are watching.
Advantages of IPTV

 You can watch what you want, when you want.

This shows that technology is now serving the
audience exactly what they want e.g. Not having
to follow a TV schedule.
 If you miss a programme from a series you are
watching then you can go back and watch that
episode, normally for up to 7 days after it was
aired.
 You do not have to watch 5 minutes of adverts
after 15 minutes of watching your selected show.
Disadvantages of IPTV

 There is normally 1 or 2 adverts that you can

not skip at the beginning, or some other
point, of the programme. (except BBC)
 If you have a slow internet connection your
programme will freeze and have to buffer
multiple times during the programme.
 The picture quality of certain programmes
will be lower then when they originally aired
due to multiple reasons such as resizing.
The future of IPTV
 In the past 4/5 years with the introduction of broadband
internet TV has started to grown in popularity, this was not
possible before due to the slow speed of dial up internet.
 With the help of faster broadband being introduced into
people homes the quality and wider choice of programmes
will be increasing.
 Internet TV may soon be faced with pay to watch fees if it
gets in higher demand. (For some programmes and channels
this has already happened but in the future it could be faced
for all programmes and channels)
 IPTV could soon be entering the 3D revolution offering
programmes in 3D for a small fee.
The future of traditional tv

No body can tell what the future for traditional

TV will be but I believe that in the near future
more TV providers will be offering TV boxes
that can provide a better service of internet
TV. It is hard to imagine that traditional TV
will be killed off by IPTV but I do believe that
companies will start putting on different
programmes during the day that will attract
the same audience as IPTV.
