Faith Formation
Devin Rey Serondo
CHAPTER I
Five Predominant Filipino
Characteristics
• A. Self Identity
• We Filipinos are Oriented
• The Anak-Magulang Relationship is of primary
importance to us Filipinos.
• This Family Centeredness supplies a basic sense of
belongingness, stability, and security.
• It is from our Families that we Filipinos naturally
draw our sense of self identity.
B. Meaning In Life
• We Filipinos are Meal Oriented (salu-salo, kainan)
• Because Filipinos consider almost everyone as part
of their family(parang pamilya), We are known for
being gracious hosts and grateful guests.
• Serving our guest with the best we have is an
unborn value to Filipinos.
C. SUFFERING IN LIFE
• We Filipinos are kundiman oriented
• The kundiman is a sad Filipino Song about
wounded love
• Filipinos are naturally attracted to heroes sacrificing
everything for the love(magpakaulipon ko tungod
ug alang kanimo)
• This acceptance of offering (pagkamalahutayon)
manifest a dispositive spiritual value of Filipinos.
D. Life Commitment
• We Filipinos are bayani-oriented
• We Filipinos are natural hero-followers
E. World View
• We Filipinos are Spirit-oriented
• We have a deep seated belief in the super natural
and in all kinds of spirits dwelling in individual
person places and things.
Five Essential Traits of
Jesus Christ
A.
• As Son of Man, Jesus leads us to his Mother Mary
who He shaves with us.
• Thus, the church stresses the exceptional
importance of our Filipinos Family as both subject
and object of Evangelization.
B.
• Jesus as Eucharist is not only the host of
the new Paschal, Meal, and the food
the breed of life, but even the guest in
every gathering.
C.
• Jesus is portrayed through our favorite Filipino
images of Hesus Nazarenos the Santo Intierro etc.
• Jesus the suffering servant can thus reach out to us
Filipinos as a healing and forgiving savior who
understands our weakness, our failures, our
feelings of depression, fear and loneliness.
D.
• Jesus as Christ the King respounds well to the
bayani oriented Filipinos
• We see Jesus Christ as the conqueror of the world
by his mission as Prophet King and Priest
E.
• The Holy Spirit, spent by the Father and the risen
Christ, draws us Filipinos into a community where
in superstition

• Eucharist >Holy Mass>Meal>Last Supper

• Born>Death>Resurrection>Ascention>church> Holy
Spirit
The Filipino Way
Mama Mary
• The outstanding characteristic of the Church in the
Philippines is a people in love with Mary.

• Even before the coming of the Spanish Missionary,

there was a small dark image of the blessed Virgin,
known only as coming "from the sea," venerated
on the shore of Manila Bay
• Thus originated the devotion to Nuestra Señora de
Guia, Our Lady, Guide Of the Way, the oldest
extant image of Mary in the Philippines.
• The typical "Filipino" approach to Christ,
therefore, is with and through Mary.
• The devotion to Mary has always been intimately
intertwined with Christ.
The two central Mysteriesof our Faith
In Christ:
• The mystery of the incarnation celebrated at
Christmas
• And of Redemption celebrated during Holy Week,
are deeply marked by the veneration of Mary
• This is portrayed graphically in the Simbang Gabi
(Misa de Gallo) and the Salubong in Easter Sunday
Morning.
• Mary is deeply involved in each of the five Filipino
characteristics leading us to Christ.
• 1.The "family altar" in so many Filipino homes
witnesses to Mary as Mother of Jesus and our
Spiritual Mother.
• Thus she is at the center of our family orientedness
2. As celebration and meal-oriented, Mary's month
of May is noted for the fiestas in her honor and
pilgrimages to her shrines.

3.For suffering in life, Mary is venerated as the Mater

Dolorosa, the Sorrowful Mother, whose "Perpetual
Help", compassion and love is sought through
popular novenas and devotions.
4. As bayani oriented, we have Mary as our Queen,
the loving Mother of Christ the King.

5. Finally as Spirit-Oriented, Mary is venerated

precisely as the woman upon whom the Holy Spirit
came, that her offspring would be called the Son of
God.
The Many Lourdes "grottos" throughout our country
testify to our Filipino attraction to her many
apparitions.
"I BELIEVE" - "WE
BELIEVE"
• -We begin our profession of faith by saying: "I
believe" or "We believe"
• -Faith comes from the Latin term fides, which
means "belief" and "trust".
• -In a general sense, with can be described as a
trust, a commitment to, a response to, or belief in
someone or something.
• Religious faith can be defined as a trust in (or
belief in), a response to, and commitment to God.
• To have faith is to believe in God and bear
witnesses to Him
• Faith is man's response to God, who reveals
Himself and gives Himself to man.
CHAPTER II
MAN'S CAPACITY FOR GOD
A. THE DESIRE FOR GOD

A. THE DESIRE FOR GOD

• The desire for God is written in the human heart,
because man is created by God and for God; and God
never ceases to draw to Himself.
• Only in God will man find the truth and happiness
he never stops searching for.
(My heart is restless until it rest in you my God
-St. Agustin)
Throughout history down to the present day, men
have given expression to their quest for God in their
religious beliefs and behavior:
In their
prayers,
sacrifices,
rituals and
meditations.
But this "intimate and vital bind of man to God" can
be forgotten, overlooked or even explicitly rejected by
man.
• Such attitude can have different casuses:
1. the cares and riches of this world;
2. the scandal or bad example on the part of believers;
3. that attitude of sinful man
which makes him hide from
God out of fear and flee his call.
B. WAYS OF COMING TO KNOW
GOD

• the person who seeks God discovers certain ways

of coming to know him.
• thsese are so called for proofs for the existence of
God
Twofold ways of coming to know God

1. The physical world 2. The human person

• Starting from • With his openness to
movement, becoming truth his freedom and
and the world's order the voice of his
and beauty, one can conscience, with his
come to a knowledge longings for happiness,
of God as the origin man's questions
and the end of the himself about the
universe existence of God
• The soul, the seed of eternity we bear ourselves,
can have it's origin only in God.
• Man's faculties make him capable of coming, to
know a knowledge of the existence of a personal
God.
• For man to be able to enter into, into real intimacy
with Him.
• God willed both to reveal Himself to man,
• and to givehim the grace of being able to welcome
revelation in faith.
