Lesson 2 Trend

Local networks are mobilized during natural disasters to help victims and repair damages. These include barangays, police, military, and some government agencies. Networks contain nodes or actors connected by links or ties through which information and resources can flow. There are human and non-human networks as well as social and computer networks that operate at local and non-local levels. Critical thinking involves correct reasoning and coherence in argument structure. It is an important higher-order thinking skill used in everyday decision-making that draws on skills like interpretation, analysis, inference, evaluation and self-regulation.

LESSON 1

Local

networks
• When a strong typhoon or earthquake hits one of
out provinces, local networks are immediately
mobilized by the government to help victims and
repair the damages.
• These networks include the barangay, the police
force, military and some government agencies.
• Other local networks such as non-government and
professional organizations, and
telecommunication.
• Networks are everywhere.
• For Anders Kariqvist (1995,82) “it represents the
idea of connections between entities in space”
• For Charles Kadushin (2012, 14) “it contains a set
of objects… and a mapping or description of
relations between the objects or nodes.
• For David Batten (1995,vii) “it is a system in which
some elements are connected to other elements in
a systematic way”
• Network as any group or system of interconnected
people or things.
3 BASIC ELEMENTS OF NETWORK:

1. ACTORS OR NODES
2. LINKS OR TIES
3. FLOWS

KINDS OF NETWORKS

1. HUMAN AND NONHUMAN

2. SOCIAL AND COMPUTER NETWORKS
3. LOCAL AND NON LOCAL
LESSON 2
CRITICAL
THINKING
• It is best to begin out examination of the nature of critical
thinking by looking into the different misconceptions about
it. Here are some of the misconceptions about critical
thinking:
1. Critical thinking is nothing but the activity of making
criticisms.
2. Critical thinking is nothing but logical thinking.
3. Critical thinking is nothing but the formal study of some
formal reasoning skills that are hardly useful in dealing
real-life.
• Critical thinking is concerned with correct
reasoning
• Critical thinking deals with the coherence of the
structure of reasoning and the relevance of the
content of reasoning
• Critical thinking is important in everyday
decision-making
• Critical thinking as good thinking
Argumentation,
reasoning, and
critical thinking
Argumentation
- Involves only statements which are linguistic
expressions that are either true or false.
- Usually expressed in grammatical form of
declarative sentence is used in its ideal function
of describing or asserting a fact.
Reasoning
- 2 general types of reasoning: inductive and
deductive.
Critical Thinking
- Is the methodological analysis of reasoning. It is
about understanding the implications of inputs (data)
and influences (bias) to the reasoning process.
- According to Smith (2003, 26) “a form of higher order
thinking consciously controlled reflective thinking
thought that draws on, but can be distinguished from,
lower-order cognitive processes like perception,
attention, and memory.”
- Ennis (1991,6) “reasonably reflective thinking that is
focused on deciding what to believe or do”
• Core Critical Thinking Skills
1. Interpretation
-enables us to “to comprehend and express the
meaning or significance of a wide variety of
experiences, situations, data, events, judgments,
conventions, belief, rules, procedures or criteria.
(Facione 2013,5)
2. Analysis
- Allows us “to identify the intended and actual
inferential relationships among statements,
questions, concepts, descriptions or other forms of
representation intended to express belief,
judgment, experiences, reasons, information, or
opinion. (Facione 2013, 5)
3. Inference
- The skill that permits us “to identify and secure
elements needed to draw reasonable conclusions;
to form conjectures and hypotheses; to consider
relevant information. (Facione 2013, 6)
4. Evaluation
- Allows us “to assess the credibility of statements
or other representations which are accounts or
descriptions of a person’s perception,
experience, situation, judgment, belief, or
opinion.
5. Explanation
-it enables us “to present in a cogent and coherent
way the results of one’s reasoning”
6. Self-Regulation
-skills enables “self-consciously monitoring one’s
cognitive activities, the elements used in those
activities, and the results produced, particularly by
applying skills in analysis, and evaluation to one’s
own inferential judgment.
