Alfred Lord Tennyson As A Representative of His Age: Couse:History of English Literature

Alfred Lord Tennyson was a Victorian poet who served as Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom from 1850 until his death in 1892. As a representative of his age, Tennyson explored themes in his poetry such as the spirit of compromise, evolutionary ideas, crisis of faith, and pessimism that were prevalent during the Victorian era. Two of his most famous poems were Ulysses, about an aging king who wishes to continue seeking knowledge, and In Memoriam, a lengthy elegy Tennyson wrote after the death of his friend that dealt with themes of grief, faith, and doubt.
