The document discusses measuring intelligence through intelligence tests. It begins by defining intelligence and explaining that while intelligence cannot be directly measured, intelligence tests can measure it by assessing things like memory, reasoning, and problem-solving abilities. It then discusses Alfred Binet's early work developing the Binet-Simon intelligence scale in the early 1900s. The document goes on to describe different types of intelligence tests, common tasks involved, and how results are analyzed and distributed in a bell curve. Finally, it outlines some common uses of intelligence tests and classifications of different test types.

MEASUREMENT OF INTELLIGENT:
MEANING

 Intelligents is not a think it is only an idea an abstraction.

 It is measurement is not possible in the same way as we
measure a piece of cloth or temperature of our body.
 So, we measure intelligence of an individual with the help of
intelligent test
 The first attempt to measure intelligence was made by
Alfred Binet with the help of his friend Simon. The scale
they made is known as Binet Simon Scale.
 Binet observed that as children advance in age,the difficulty
level of the tasks they can perform also increases.
Measurement of intelligence: Binet’s Mental Age

 A measure of intelligence test performance devised by

Alfred Binet
 Based on the assumption that all children follow the
same course of development but at different speeds
 Chronological age that most typical corresponds to a
given level of performance
 Child who does as well as the average 8- years
Old is said to have a mental age of 8.

Intelligence Scale (WAIS)

Intelligence Scale is the most widely used intelligence

test for adults (Watkins, Campbell, Nieberding, &
Hallmark, 1995). The current version of the WAIS, the
WAIS-IV, was standardized on 2,200 people ranging from
16 to 90 years of age. It consists of 15 different tasks, each
designed to assess intelligence, including working
memory, arithmetic ability, spatial ability, and general
knowledge about the world (see Figure 9.4 “Sample Items
From the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS)”)
The Wechsler scale has also been adapted for preschool
children in the form of the Wechsler Primary and
Preschool Scale of Intelligence (WPPSI-III) and for older
children and adolescents in the form of the Wechsler
Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-IV).
USES OF INTELLIGENT TEST

 Intelligence tests are also used by industrial and

organizational psychologists in the process of
personnel selection. Personnel selection is the use of
structured tests to select people who are likely to
perform well at given jobs (Schmidt & Hunter, 1998).
 The psychologists begin by conducting a job analysis in
which they determine what knowledge, skills, abilities,
and personal characteristics (KSAPs) are required for a
given job.
 This is normally accomplished by surveying and/or
interviewing current workers and their supervisors.
Based on the results of the job analysis, the
psychologists choose selection methods that are most
Classification of intelligence test
Intelligence tests may be classified under three
categories:

1. Individual Tests:

These tests are administered to one individual at a time. These

cover age group from 2 years to 18 years. These are:

(a) The Binet- Simon Tests (c)Mental Scholastic Test of Burt

(b) Revised Tests by Terman (d)Wechsler Test

2. Group Tests:

Group tests are administered to a group of people Group tests had

their birth in America – when the intelligence of the recruits who
joined the army in the First World War was to be calculated.

These are: (a) The Army Alpha and Beta Test,

(b) Terman’s Group Tests, and

(c) Otis Self- Administrative Tests.

Classification of intelligence test
Among the group tests there are two types:

(i) Verbal, and

(ii) Non-Verbal.

Verbal intelligence is the ability to analyze information and

solve problems using language-based reasoning. Language-
based reasoning may involve reading or listening to words,
conversing, writing, or even thinking.

Nonverbal intelligence is the ability to analyze information

and solve problems using visual, or hands-on reasoning. In

3. Performance:

These tests are administered to the illiterate persons. These

tests generally involve the construction of certain patterns or
solving problems in terms of concrete material.

Some of the famous tests are:

(a) Koh’s Block Design Test,

(b) The Cube Construction Tests, and (c) The Pass

along Tests.
