Algebraic Expression

The document defines key terms used in algebra, such as variables, expressions, terms, coefficients, constants, bases, and exponents. It also explains the order of operations to follow when simplifying numerical expressions, which is to perform operations within grouping symbols first before evaluating exponents, multiplying/dividing, and adding/subtracting from left to right. Finally, it describes how to evaluate algebraic expressions by substituting the assigned values for variables into an expression and simplifying the resulting numerical expression.

that represents an
unknown number
Ex:
x, y, a, b, c, , β, θ, γ, δ

SIMPLIFYING
NUMERICAL
EXPRESSION
S
To simplify a
numerical expression
means to replace the
expression with a value
resulting from
performing the
operations involved in
the expression.
In simplifying
numerical expressions, the
following order of operations
should be followed:
1. Perform the operations within
grouping symbols. If the
expression contains grouping
symbols within a grouping
symbol, simplify first the
innermost group.
3. Evaluate the
exponential
expressions.
4. Multiply or divide from
left to right.
5. Add or subtract from
left to right.
Simplify the following:
1. 10 + (6)(5)
2. (8 – 5) (4 + 2)
3. 24 ÷ 6 - 2 2

10 − 32
4. 6+7
Simplify the following:
5. 8 + 5 − 4 4
2

6. 12 ÷ 2 ∙ 3 – 6
2

7. 2 ÷ 2 ÷ 2 ÷ 2
5 3 2

8. 2 ( - 1 + 3) + 7 (6 – 6)
9. 144 − 4 + 81 - 36
EVALUATING
ALGEBRAIC
EXPRESSION
S
To evaluate algebraic
expressions, substitute
the variable or variables in
an algebraic expression
with the corresponding
assigned value and
simplify the resulting
numerical expression.
Evaluate the variable
expression when
a=-1
b=2
c=5
1. – 5a – 2c
2.a – 2c
3.- 𝑎 2

4. 2𝑐 2

5. - 3a + 4b
6. 𝑏 - 3a
4

7. 6b ÷ a
8. (𝑎 + 𝑏)2

9. 𝑎 + 𝑏
2 2

10. [𝑎 + 𝑏 ]
2 2 3
