EARLY LIFE: DHIRUBHAI AMBANI WAS BORN IN A MODH BANIYA FAMILY TO HIRACHAND AND
JAMNABEN IN THE VILLAGE OF CHORWAD. HIS FATHER WAS A SCHOOL TEACHER.RAISED IN A FRUGAL LIVING
CONDITION,HE WAS AWARE OF INSUFFICIENCIES THAT THE FAMILY DEALT WITH. DHIRUBHAI WAS ALWAYS AN
ACTIVE PARTICIPANT IN POLITICAL ACTIVITIES BUT HAD TO GIVE UP HIS INTEREST DUE TO HIS FATHERS ILLNESS
AND TOOK UP A JOB IN ADEN

PERSONAL LIFE:
HE WAS BORN ON 28 DECEMBER,1932.HE HAD 2 SISTERS AND 2 BROTHERS.HE MARRIED KOKILABEN IN
1954.THE COUPLE WAS BLESSED WITH FOUR CHILDREN,MUKESH AMBANI,ANIL AMBANI,NINA KOTHARI AND
DEEPTI SALGAONKAR. DHIRUBHAI’S RAGS TO RICHES STORY REMAINS ONE OF THE MOST INFLUENCIAL STORIES
FOR THE YOUTH IN CORPORATE WORLD. IN THE YEAR 2013 DHIRUBHAI AMBANI’S NET VALUE WAS $58.67 BILLION.
DHIRUBHAI SHOWED A VERY LITTLE INTEREST IN FORMAL EDUCATION;HOWEVER HE GREWUP TO BE A
HARDWORKING AND TENACIOUS YOUNG MAN

EARLY CAREER
By the time Dhirubhai reached Aden, it was one of the busiest ports in the world. At
Aden, he started working as a clerk with A. Besse & Co – one of the biggest trading
firms in the region .Later on he decided to return back to India instead of joining his
collegues in Britain. He borrowed a heafty amount and started his textile mill in
Naroda. Eventhough he faced a lot of backlash on the sale of ONLY VIMAL.A sound
marketing lead to a huge profit and in a few years the whole population of india
started wearing clothes made and distributed by Reliance. Thus he was known as the
polyester prince.
RELIANCE INDUSTRIES:
DHIRUBHAI AMBANI STARTED RELIANCE INDUSTRIES IN 1966 AND AS OF 2017,THE
COMPANY HAS OVER 250,000 EMPLOYEES & PROVIDES ALMOST 5% OF THE CENTRAL
GOVERNMENT’S TOTAL TAX REVENUE.AS OF 2012,RELIANCE INDUSTRIES WAS LISTED
IN THE TOP 10 FORTUNE 500 LIST OF WORLD’S BIGGEST COMPANIES BY REVENUE.
RELIANCE INDUSTRIES STARTED ITS BUSINESS IN POLYESTER BUT NOW HAS VENTURED
INTO DIFFERENT BUSINESSES.RELIANCE PETROLEUM PVT LTD BECAME INDIAS
LARGEST CORPORATE.

DEATH: AMBANI HAD HIS FIRST STROKE IN 1986. ON 24 JUNE,2002 AFTER


SUFFERING A MAJOR STROKE HE WAS ADMITTED IN THE BREACH CANDY HOSPITAL
IN MUMBAI.HE WAS IN COMA FOR MORE THAN A WEEK AND A NUMBER OF
DOCTORS WERE CONSULTED.HE DIED ON 6 JULY 20022
RELIANCE AFTER DHIRUBHAI:
• FOLLOWING A STROKE IN 1986,AMBANI HANDED OVER CONTROL OF RELIANCE TO
HIS SONS MUKESH & ANIL.AMBANI DIED ON 6 JULY 2002.
• IN NOVEMBER 2004,MUKESH AMBANI IN AN INTERVIEW,ADMITTED TO HAVING
DIFFERENCES WITH HIS BROTHER ANIL OVER ‘OWNERSHIP ISSUES’.HE ALSO SAID
THAT THE DIFFERENCES “ARE IN PRIVATE DOMAIN”.AFTER THE DEATH OF
DHIRUBHAI AMBANI,THE GROUP WAS SPLIT INTO RELIANCE INDUSTRIES
LIMITED,HEADED BY MUKESH AMBANI AND RELIANCE ANIL DHIRUBHAI AMBANI
GROUP [RELIANCE ADA GROUP] HEADED BY ANIL AMBANI
ACHIEVEMENTS OF DHIRUBHAI AMBANI
• January 2016- Awarded Padma Vibhushan, country's second highest
civilian awards posthumously.[19]October 2011-Awarded posthumously
the ABLF Global Asian Award at the Asian Business Leadership Forum
Awards.November 2000–Conferred Man of the Century award by
Chemtech Foundation and Chemical Engineering World in recognition of
his outstanding contribution to the growth and development of the
chemical industry in India.2000, 1998 and 1996– Featured among Power
50-the most powerful people in Asia by Asiaweek magazine.June 1998 –
"Dean's Medal" by The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, for
setting an outstanding example of leadership. Dhirubhai Ambani has the
rare distinction of being the first Indian to get Wharton School Dean's
Medal[20]August 2001 – Economic Times Awardsfor Corporate
Excellence for Lifetime Achievement.Dhirubhai Ambani was named the
"Man of 20th Century" by the Federation of Indian Chambers of
Commerce and Industry (FICCI).A poll conducted by The Times of India in
2000 voted him "Greatest Creator of Wealth in the Centuries".
