Internship Presentation

This document presents an internship project on industrial automation that involves building a pneumatic circuit controlled by a PLC. The project aims to execute a sequence of cylinder movements (A+, A-, B+, B-) with pressure and time delays between steps. The document discusses fluid power systems, applications of hydraulics and pneumatics, an overview of PLCs including the L20 03VRS model used. Diagrams of the pneumatic circuit and PLC logic are presented. The conclusions state the objectives were met and knowledge was gained about operating automatic pneumatic circuits with PLC interfacing.

Fluid Power and PLC
Fluid Power
• Fluid power is the use of fluids under pressure to generate, control and transmit
power.
• Hydraulics – oil ; Pneumatics – air
• Basic elements required by such a system are the fluid source, the controlling
elements like valves, the actuators (cylinders and motors), the prime mover
(generally an electric motor), circulating elements (pump or compressor), sensing
elements (may or may not), accumulators and filters.
• The governing law of these drives is Pascal law.
“the change in pressure of a confined fluid is distributed undiminished
throughout it, equally in all
directions”.

PLC
• A PLC or an industrial computer is an extended and bigger version of a
microcontroller, classified under sequential controllers.
• These perform logical, timing, sequencing, arithmetic operations using the
onboard memory.
• The PLCs are known for their high reliability in control and ease of programming
and process fault diagnosis.

PLC L20 03VRS is a mid-tier first-generation of the Bosch Rexroth
products. Some of the L20 03VRS onboard components are as follows:
PLC L20 03VRS • 166 MHz processor, takes 150μs to execute 1000 instructions.
• Retentive memory of 64KB
• User memory of 3MB (1MB for firmware and 2MB for coding)
• Ethernet and Profi-BUS ports, LAN for connectivity.
• Onboard digital input (DI8, 2A) and output (DO8, 0.5A) modules
• 256 bits In-line module capacity
• 32 Master/Slave connections, 126 inputs (PLC s)
• Colour coding: Blue (DI); Pink (DO); Green (AI); Yellow (AO);
• Power: Red (+), Blue (-), Green (ground)

Internship Project
Aim:
To build a pneumatic circuit with double solenoid actuated
direction control valves and execute one cycle of sequence A+ A-
B+ B- through PLC interfacing. A pressure delay of 4 bar between
sequences A+ A- and B+ B- and a time delay of 5s between
sequences A- and B+ are required. Here, A and B are two cylinders.

Conclusions

• The course objectives were learnt with a keen attempt.

• The knowledge of operating automatic/interfaced hydraulic and
pneumatic circuits with the PLCs was understood.
• A peek on the advancements in the industrial automation field.
