Prof. Ivan Sutherland

1997
Published a survey that defined the field, described
many problems, and summarized the developments
up to that point.

HOW DOES AUGMENTED REALITY WORK ??

HOW DOES AUGMENTED REALITY WORK ??

Hardware
•Key hardware components in AR-based devices are a processor,
display, input devices and sensors.
•The display is either a monitor, handheld device, eyeglass or Head
Mounted Displays (HMD).
•The input device is either the camera of a Smartphone or a webcam
connected to the internet.
•Sensors are gyroscope or accelerometer of a mobile device or it
could be an infrared sensor.
•Nowadays,a Smartphone consists of all hardware requirements of
augmented reality.
HOW DOES AUGMENTED REALITY WORK ??

Software
•Software plays a key role in the functioning of any device based on
Augmented reality technology.
•Special 3D Augmented reality programs like D’Fusion are used in AR-based
applications.
•Virtual images, used for overlapping over the real live image, can be
generated using 3D software.
•Software can be AutoCad3D, StudioMax or Cinema4D.
• CT and MRI data can also be added to the Real world.
•Also,to experience Augmented reality, end-user has to download a software
application or browser plug-in.
HOW DOES AUGMENTED REALITY WORK ??

Remote Server
• Apart from this hardware and software , a web or cloud server plays an
important role in storing the database of virtual images,
•Based on the request received from AR application, virtual images are
retrieved from web or cloud server and sent to application.

TYPES OF AUGMENTED REALITY
Marker Based AR
When a Smartphone having Marker-based
AR application scans a pattern such as a bar-
code or a symbol through camera of it, the
software recognizes it and superimposes a
digital image on the screen.

Marker-Less AR

• Image encoded with information that’s

translated by complex software to produce
a 3D object that maintains spatial
orientation within a scene.

• Detect the user’s position using coordinate
system using GPS

• Popular in Tourism

WHAT IS AUGMENTED REALITY BEING USED FOR RIGHT NOW ??

• Education
• Marketing
• Smart Shop
• Architecture Designing
• Gaming
• Military Training

AR in Education

• Provides Rich Contextual Learning

•Engages a Learner in ways that have never been
possible
• Provide opportunities for more authentic learning
• Appeals to multiple learning style

•No real consequences if mistakes are made during
skills training
AR in Marketing & Advertisement

•We Can Try The Product Whether it is

suitable for us or not
• We just have to face the camera
•It will show Skin care of one month

• Rather than staring at small print

labels or Googling it for every
individual product, why not utilize

AR in SmartShop

•AR Tech Helps People to visually envision the

furniture in their home before their purchase.

2. Insert/Move the furniture within a
photo/video

AR in Architecture & Designing

•Augmented reality has a wealth of

design and construction uses beyond
visualization.
•Screen overlays a virtual model of what
the project will look like upon
completion.
google.com/augmented-reality-in-architecture
AR in Gaming
•AR gaming essentially integrates game
visual and audio content with the user’s
environment in real-time.
•Game often superimposes a pre-
created environment on top of a user’s
actual environment.

google.com/augmented-reality-in-gaming

•More advanced AR games may

actually build an environment from user
surroundings.

google.com/augmented-reality-in-gaming
AR in Sports
•Fans focus’ is not only on the live
game, it is also on the ‘second screen’
which shows the stats expected score
twitter battle for team, etc.

google.com/augmented-reality-in-sports

• AR will enhance the sports viewing

experience by combining the real
world with augmented elements
such as graphics, sounds,

google.com/augmented-reality-in-sports
AR in Military Training

• Flexible enough to train, rehearse

missions and experiment with new
organization
•Save money, much less dangerous
to trainees, and allow for the
development of specific cognitive
skills.
•Real field equipment is fragile and
harder to replace than simulators.

AR in SnapChat

• Filters that allow users to experiment

with their appearances, usually by
distorting their faces with special effects
such as puppy dog ears.
•Filters are so popular that Snapchat lets
users create their own

FUTURE OF AUGMENTED REALITY

•No Doubt it is the future

generation technology
•Visualization quality and
resolution will improve
• Digitalization In every field like
marketing, medical, education,
military will be in a whole new
level with use of augmented
reality.
BENEFITS

• Reliable For Military Training

• Reduces Line Between Real & Virtual World
• Highly Interactive
• Operates Simultaneously With Real Time Environment

DRAWBACKS
• Lack Of Privacy In AR Applications
• Low Performance
CHALLENGES

• Social Acceptance
• User Interface Limitation
• Technological Limitation

ISSUES
• Poor Experience
• Digital Fatigue
CONCLUSION

• Augmented Reality will further Blur the line between what

is real and what is computer generated by enhancing
what we see, hear, feel and smell.
•It has possibilities beyond our imagination and
perception.
• It will have huge applications in almost every field.
