Expressing Possession in English

There are several ways to express possession in English: 1. The Saxon genitive uses the possessor's name plus an apostrophe s and the possessed item, such as "Mary's sister". 2. The "of" construction uses the possessed item followed by "of" and the possessor, like "the keys of the car". 3. Possessive adjectives come before a noun to indicate possession, such as "my car" or "your book". 4. Possessive pronouns are used in place of a noun to indicate possession, for example "That car is mine".

IN ENGLISH
✘Ways of expressing possession:

-Saxon genitive

- -of construction

-Possessive adjectives

-Possessive pronouns
SAXON GENITIVE

FORM: possessor (singular or plural) + ‘s + person or thing


possessed

Examples: Mary’s sister / my friend’s house

✘We use it in the following cases:

 Personal names: Churchill’s statue.


 Personal nouns: the girl’s dress.
 Collective nouns: the police’s department.
 Higher animals: animals that share more characteristics with humans:
the elephant’s tale.
SAXON GENITIVE

✘We use it in the following cases:

Geographical names, institutional names and nouns referring to


regions: Europe’s stability, the hotel’s entrance.

 Nouns referring to time: a week’s holiday.

 Nouns of special interest to human activity: the poll’s results


- OF CONSTRUCTION

FORM: person or thing possessed + of + possessor

Examples: the keys of the car / the roof of the shop

✘We use it in the following cases:

 Inanimate possessors: the walls of the room.


 When the possessor is followed by a phrase: the directions of a man
with a whistle.
 With expressions of measure: a litre of water
 In newspaper headlines
