Analysis on Indian Census and

GDP

By – Students of Design Management 2019


Indian Census
• An official count or survey of the population in a country.
• This is the only source of primary data in the village, town and ward level.
• It provides valuable information for planning and formulation polices.
• It helps us review the country’s progress in the past decade and most
importantly plan for the future.
• It includes demography, economic activity, literacy and education, housing
and housing amenities, urbanization, fertility and mortality, SCs and STs,
language, religion, migration, disability and many other socio-cultural data.

Why is it important?
Geography of India
• The country of India spreads over an area of 3, 287, 263 sq. km.
• North and South: 3, 214 km. and East and West: 2, 993 km.
• The country occupies just 2.4 % of the total surface of the earth.
• It is the 7th largest country in the world.
• Consists of 29 states and 7 union territories
• Rajasthan being the largest state and Goa the smallest state in term
of land area covered.
Highlights of Census 2011
• World population - 7 Billion (700 crores)
• Total population of India – 1.21 Billion (121 Crores) – constitutes 17% of world
population
• Increase in population during 2001-11 is 181 Million (18.1 Crores)
• Total literacy rate of India – 74%
• Sex Ratio (females per 1000 males) – 943
• Top populous state – Uttar Pradesh
• Least populous state – Sikkim
• Most literate state – Kerala
• Least literate state – Bihar
• Census of 2011 was held in two phases: Houselisting and housing Census, and

Interpretation of the above table:


• Population of Kerala literacy rate , whereas, population of UP literacy rate
• Literacy rate in India is calculated as – 7yrs of age and above, who can read and write with understanding
(18 Official Languages)
• Literacy rate in India is 73%
• Switzerland has 99% literacy rate but a population of 86,02,725- their literacy rate is calculated as- 15 yrs of
age and above, who can read and write with understanding (3 Languages)
• Rural – Urban distribution: 68.84% & 31.16%
• Rural – urban literacy rate: 68.9% & 85.0%
Understanding the sectors of Indian economy
Classification of sectors : The shift between the sectors can be seen in

The Effects On Indian Economy
GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT

The value of goods and services produced in each sector, in a particular year, is calculated and added up. The sum of the
production in three sectors gives us the total production in a country, called as, Gross Domestic Product.

GDP- It is the value of final goods and services produced within a country, during a particular year.

The three Sectors are interrelated. One sector needs


the help of another to carry out production.

This affected the employment of the people.
