Solving Quadratic

Equations by
Completing the Square
Objectives:
Solves quadratic equations by: (a) extracting
square roots; (b) factoring; (c) completing the
square; and (d) using quadratic formula. (M9AL-
Ia-b-1)
a. Identify and complete perfect square trinomial
b. Solve a quadratic equation by completing the
square
c. Value accumulated knowledge as means of new
understanding
Activity 1:
Express each of the following perfect
square trinomial as a square of binomial.
a. x2 + 6x + 9 d. x2 – 14x + 49
b. x2 + 2x + 1 e. x2 – 18x + 81
c. 25x2 – 30xy + 9y2
How do we solve a quadratic equation by completing the square?
a. What are the solutions of the quadratic equation x2 – 10x + 19 = 0?
b.Write the solutions by following the procedure
x2 – 10x + 19 = 0 Transpose 19 to the right side of the equation.
Complete the square by adding [1/2(10)]2 = 25
Write the left side as the square of binomial.
Extract the square of both sides
Solve for x.
Activity 2: Complete Me!
Find the solutions of each of the following
quadratic equations by completing the
square.
a. x2 – 2x = 3 d. s2 + 4s – 21 = 0
b. t2 + 10t + 9 = 0 e. 4x2 + 8x – 9 = 0
c. 5x +20x +32 = 0

Thinking About:
a. Which numbers were easy to deal with? Difficult?
b. What concepts/principles did you consider in
factoring?
c. Which techniques did you apply in answering
them?
d. What steps did you undertake solving quadratic
equation by completing the square?
Take Note:
To solve a quadratic equation ax2 + bx = c by completing
the square
a.Transform the equation into the form x2 + (𝑏/𝑎) x = −𝑐/𝑎
b.Add to each side of the equation the square of half the
coefficient of x.
c.Write the left side as the square of a binomial.
d. Take the square root of each side of the equation.
Solve the resulting linear equations.
Group Activity:
“In time of difficulties, be like a ____
tree.”
Write the indicated letter into the box
that corresponds to the solutions of the
quadratic equation solved by completing
the square. Show your solutions.
