cars, clothes, home, and body.
ASSOCIATION OF

POSSESSIONS
ASSOCIATION OF SELF & EXTENDED POSSESSIONS
ASSOCIATION OF SELF & EXTENDED POSSESSIONS
BODY
We strive to provide for our body
and make sure that it functions well.
Certain people even have insurance
for their body parts. e.g. Mariah
Carey and her vocal cords and legs.
ASSOCIATION OF SELF & EXTENDED POSSESSIONS
CLOTHES
“Philosophy of the Dress” by
Herman Lotze, explains that clothing
is an important part of the self. The
clothes become extensions of who
we are that is why we strive to
dress well.
ASSOCIATION OF SELF & EXTENDED POSSESSIONS
CLOTHES
Clothing is considered as a form of
self-expression and the clothes we
wear reflect who we are as a
person.
ASSOCIATION OF SELF & EXTENDED POSSESSIONS
IMMEDIATE FAMILY
This hierarchy includes our parents
and siblings. We are affected when
something happens to a family
member i.e. death or illness. We see
our family as a replica of ourselves.
ASSOCIATION OF SELF & EXTENDED POSSESSIONS
HOME
“The home is where the heart is.”
The home is considered the earliest
nest of our selfhood. Our
experiences inside the home were
recorded and marked on particular
things in our home.
ASSOCIATION OF SELF & EXTENDED POSSESSIONS
POSSESSIONS
The things we possess have a
certain value that we give them.
when we lose something, we feel
sad because we lost the connection
to that object.
ASSOCIATION OF SELF & EXTENDED POSSESSIONS

The things we posses are also
considered extensions of ourselves.
E.g. cellphones or other gadgets.

OF EXTENDED
SELVES
ASSOCIATION OF SELF & EXTENDED POSSESSIONS
COLLECTIONS
In the past, people collect out of
necessity i.e. food, water, clothing,
and other resources, however, today,
people no longer collect out of
necessity, but out of luxury
ASSOCIATION OF SELF & EXTENDED POSSESSIONS
COLLECTIONS
“I shop, therefore I am.”
People get a sense of security when
they have things that make them
comfortable. People collect things
that give them comfort.
ASSOCIATION OF SELF & EXTENDED POSSESSIONS
PETS
Some people treat pets as members
of the family i.e. clothe pets, go to
regular check-ups, sleep with them,
spend to groom them, photograph
them, and even mourn their death.
ASSOCIATION OF SELF & EXTENDED POSSESSIONS
PETS
Pets are seen as surrogate parents
for children and surrogate children
for adults.

BODY PARTS
In psychoanalytic terms, the
extension of the self to the body
parts is called cathexis. When a
certain body part is more highly

possessions and physical comfort
are more important than spiritual

“I shop, therefore I am.”
A person not defined by what he

Do you shop according to your means;
Or do you shop beyond your means?
APPRAISING ONES SELF BASED ON MATERIALISM
MATERIALISM
“People were created to be loved,
and things were created to be used;
the reason why the world is in so
much chaos right now is because
people are being used, and things
are being loved.”
