INTRODUCTION
• True printmaking did not come into existence in
western art until the middle of the 12th century AD ,
after the west learnt the secret of paper making.
• The first prints were in the form of woodcuts and
wood –engravings .
• As tools and techniques improved and new materials
were discovered relief printing became more refined .
• In present times after centuries of improvements and
modifications the thing that leave an impression on a
material is used in printing.
• It can also been described as a complicated process by
which impressions may be transferred to another
surface by means of pressure.

• We must understand that there is no link between


printmaking and the mechanical means of reproducing
commercial images such as posters advertisements ,
• Creative printmaking requires imagination and co-
ordination of the eye ,mind, and hand, combined with
the thorough knowledge and practice of the technical
methods of the medium.

RELIEF METHOD

• In this process parts of the wood block or metal plate


which are to print blank are left in relief and the rest is
cut away .

• The principal methods of relief are woodcut wooden


graving and linocut.

• To these maybe added techniques such as metal cut


and relief etching.
INTAGLIO METHOD

• THE MOST COMPLEX METHOD OF PRINTING


PROCESSES.

• It is a term which covers multiple techniques, usually a


combination of those used in itching and collagraphy.

• It is considered an effective preliminary to etching for


its sharp fine and precise lines and details.
LITHOGRAPHY
• .IS a process of printing from a flat smooth surface .Areas
to be printed are identified by the thickness of the media
applied .
• Lithography was first introduced by Aloys Senefeler in
1796.
• Prints can be made from lithographic coated paper ,stone
.colour lithography plaster lithography
• THE WORD LITHOGRAPH ii made from the Greek
words litho means stone and graphin means to write.
• In print making the term lithography is referred as a stone
printing process.

• A monoprint is an impression taken from a printing


done on a piece of glass metal or any hard non
absorbant smooth surface .

• Only one impression can usually be made from the


painting since an image from one surface is transferred
to another.

invented .
• Printmaking first flourished in Europe in 15th century ,
when the process of papermaking was imported from
east.
• Early Buddhists used text and images printed on paper
to disseminate religious ideas .
• Since that time printmaking has been practiced along
with its various techniques as an important form of
fine Arts.
