The document discusses a bionic eye, which is an experimental visual device intended to restore vision in blind individuals. It consists of a camera attached to glasses that transmits signals to a microchip implanted in the eye. The chip converts the signals to electrical impulses that stimulate retinal cells, allowing the brain to interpret an image. Key advantages are identifying objects and movement to aid daily life, though repairs may be difficult and the device is not usable for all blind individuals due to costs. The bionic eye provides hope for treating retinal diseases like macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa.

BIONIC EYE
 Introduction
 Human Eye

 Diseases of the Eye

 Bionic Eye

 Working of Bionic Eye

 What is ASR?

 Working of ASR

 Advantages & Disadvantages

 Conclusion
 Bionic eye, is an experimental visual device.
 Bionic eye is an artificial eye which provide visual
sensations to the brain.
 Bionic eye is intended to restore functional vision
in those suffering from partial or complete
blindness.
 Technology provided by this help the blind
people to get vision again.
 The Human Eye is an organ that reacts to light and
allows vision.
 Eye is a part of the sensory nervous system.
 The main part of the eye is retina.
 The retina is an inside the wall of eye which works as
film of a camera to capture the light signals and
transmit them to brain via optic nerves to create
vision.
 Internal structure of Human Eye
There are mainly two kinds of diseases related to eye:

Retinitis
Pigmentosa
Macular Degeneration
It is a Hereditary Genetic Disease

Gradually progresses towards centre

of the eye

Spares the foveal region

Ex:Night Blindness, Photophobia etc.

Genetic related

Cones in Macula region degenerate

Loss of central vision

Common among old people

Ex: Blurred Vision,Low Visuality etc

 It consists of electronic systems having image
sensors,microprocessors,receivers,radio transmitters, and
retinal chips.
 It consists of a computer chip which is kept in the back of
effected person eye and linked with a mini video camera built
into glasses that they wear.
 Then an image captured by the camera are focused to the
chip which converts it into electrical signal that brain
interpret.
 The bionic vision consists of a camera, attached to a pair of glasses,
which transmits high-frequency radio signals to a microchip
implanted in the eye.
 Electrodes on the implanted chip convert these signals into electrical
impulses to stimulate cells in the retina that connect to the optic
nerve.
 These impulses are then passed down along the optic nerve to the
vision processing centres of the brain, where they are interpreted as
an image.
 A visual prosthesis, is an
experimental visual device
intended to restore functional
vision in those suffering from
partial or total blindness.
 In 1983 Joao Lobo Antunes,a
world renowed potuguese
doctor, implanted a bionic eye
in a person born blind.
 The brothers Alan Chow &
Vincent Chow have developed a
microchip containing 3500
photo diodes, which detect
light and convert it into
electrical impulses which is
called a ASR.
 The ASR microchip is a 2mm
diameter silicon chip which
contains 5000 microscopic
solar cells called
“Microphotodiodes”
 It detects light & convert it
into electrical impulses, which
stimulate healthy retinal
ganglion cells are sent to Brain
by optic nerve.
Advantages: Disadvantages:
 It identifies the location  Repairing is difficult if any
or movement of objects of the devices got damaged.
and people.  Those who lost their visions
 Helps in other activities due to other reasons could
of daily life, such as not use this device.
detecting street curbs  It may not work for blinded
and walking on a as children or as infants.
sidewalk without  The cost of the device is too
stepping off. high.
 Upgradeable external
hardware & software to
benefit from future
innovations
 Revolutionary piece of Technology.
 It is the first useful artificial eye is now helping a blind
man walk safely around and read large letters.
 Good news for the patients who ever suffering from
Macular Degeneration & Retinitis Pigmentosa.
