 The Bicol Region also known simply as

Bicol (also spelled Bikol) and


historically known as Ibalong prior to
Spanish colonization is a region of the
Philippines designated as Region V.
 The Bicol Region comprises the
southern part of Luzon, the largest
island in the Philippine archipelago.
 The region is bounded by the Lamon
Bay to the north, Philippine sea to the
east, and the Sibuyan Sea and Ragay
Gulf to the west.
 Camarines Sur is the largest province in area and
population and the Catanduanes is the smallest in
area as well as population.

 The Bicol Region is home to both the world's largest


and smallest fishes.

 Donsol, a fishing town in Sorsogon province, serves


as a sanctuary to a group of 40 whale sharks
(Rhincodon typus), which are considered as the
largest fish in the world. Locally known as
"butanding", whale sharks visit the waters of Donsol
from November to May.

 The world's smallest commercial fish, SINARAPAN


(Mistichthys luzonensis), can be found only in Lakes
Bato and Buhi in Camarines Sur province. Sinarapan
is a goby which grows to an average length of 1.25
centimeters, just slightly longer than the dwarf goby.

Mount Isarog located in the province of Camarines Sur, Philippines. The
mighty Isarog is perhaps one of the more defining sights in the Bicol
Region, an imposing figure that has been truly blessed by nature.
Mount Iriga, also known as Mount Asog in Camarines Sur. The views at the
peaks are breathtaking, offering a view of Mt. Mayon, Mt. Malinao, at Mt.
Masaraga on the south; and even a distant Catanduanes southeast.
Mt. Malinao is situated between the provinces of Albay and
Camarines Sur. Mt. Malinao is the second of the ‘Magayon Trio’ – the three
beautiful mountains of the province of Albay.

Catandayagan Falls located in the town of Monreal, Masbate. Visitors who
have come from all over the Philippines and beyond have been in awe of this
breathtaking and amazing falls. It drops from 60 feet to its base into a pool of
cool, clear water. It is a picture of grace and tranquility in the heart of nature.
Quitinday Falls and Underground River of Jovellar, Albay. Local’s say that it

 Mayon also known as Mayon Volcano or Mount Mayon is


an active stratovolcano in the province of Albay in Bicol
Region, it is the most popular cone shaped volcano in the
country and one of the most beautiful in the world.
 Mayon is a classic stratovolcano with a small central summit
crater. The cone is considered the world's most perfectly
formed volcano for its symmetry, which was formed through
layers of lava flows and pyroclastic surges from past eruptions
and erosion.
 In the Bicol dialect it is called Bulkang Magayon which means
Beautiful Volcano in English. It was named after the legendary
heroine Daragang Magayon or Beautiful Lady.
 The volcano is the centerpiece of the Albay Biosphere
Reserve, declared by UNESCO in 2016.
The Historical Cagsawa Ruins of Daraga, Albay
Cagsawa Ruins
 Situated in Albay, Cagsawa Ruins is a historical landmark that serves as the
centerpiece of the Cagsawa Ruins Park where tourists can enjoy the scenic
view of Mayon Volcano.

 The ruins also stood as an image of Bicol region’s magnificent landscape for
almost two centuries. It symbolizes Bicol’s rich history together with the
strength and flexibility of the people towards calamities and ravages of
Mother Nature.

 Cagsawa was derived from the word “Kag” which means owner and “sawa”
for python. It could also mean too much or excesses.

 Today, the site of the Cagsawa ruins is now a park managed by the
municipal government of Daraga and is now the most visited tourist spot in
Albay. In 2015, the site was declared a national cultural treasure, the
Philippines’ highest designation for a cultural property.
Tiwi Hot Springs National Park

 Tiwi Hot Springs National Park is located in Tiwi, Albay,


Philippines.

 A popular destination for locals is the Tiwi Hot Springs National


Park which is known for its “medicinal waters.” A highly active
thermal area, Tiwi has long been a popular place to "take the
medicinal waters" and bathhouses abound. The waters are
hottest in Naglagbong Lake, a boiling sulfur pool.
Mt. Isarog
Mt. Isarog

 Mount Isarog has been the ancestral territory of the indigenous


Isarog Agta people for thousands of years prior to the arrival of the
Spanish. They are one of the first inhabitants in the entire Philippines
and are of Negrito origin. They are a group of Aeta people with a
distinct language and heritage unique from others.

 A paradise at the heart of Camarines Sur is lotfy Mt. Isarog, this


mountain has a rich biodiversity and beautiful views: its very own
mossy forests and verdant crater, an overview of Bicol Peninsula, and
a glimpse of majestic Mt. Mayon.

 It abundance of water is refreshing, with streams and waterfalls


encountered along the trails, and sulfuric springs beckon to relax
weary mountaineers and other visitors.
Mt. Iriga
Mount Iriga

 Mt. Asog, also known as Mt. Iriga, is an old volcano in the province
of Camarines Sur, Bicol Region. Although it is outshined by the
world-famous Mt. Mayon to the south and the higher, grander Mt.
Isarog to the north, it possesses its own charms. For one, the views
at the peaks are breathtaking, offering a view of Mt. Mayon, Mt.
Malinao, at Mt. Masaraga on the south.

 Mt. Asog has a colorful history. It was named after a ancient datu
(chieftain) of the Agtas named Asog, who reigned over the region.
Sometimes it is also called Mt. Sumagang, which means “Mountain
of the Rising Sun”.
Mt. Bulusan

 Mount Bulusan is a stratovolcano, a cone-shaped volcano which has


one or several summit craters. It has a base diameter of 15
kilometers (km). Located in Sorsogon province, it is about 70 km
away from Mayon Volcano.

 It is the Philippines fourth most active volcano

 Mount Bulusan or Bulusan Volcano, is the


southernmost volcano on Luzon Island in the Republic of
the Philippines. It is situated in the province of Sorsogon in
the Bicol region.
Daraga Church: A historical treasure in Albay

 Tucked away on peaceful hill in the town of Daraga lies an Old spanish
colonial church that is considered as one of the most beautiful churches in
the Philippines. The Daraga Church in Daraga Albay is also known as the
Our Lady Of The Gate or The Church Of Nuestra Senora De La Porteria.

 The Church building is proudly declared as a National treasure and goes


through a restoration work to maintain the beauty of this religious
structure.

 The church is a gift from the Franciscan missionaries to Daraga and the
legacy continue to attract people even today. Daraga church is an
architectural and cultural treasure which is priceless and an important part
of the Albayano heritage.
Budiao Ruins, Albay

Budiao Ruins

 BUDIAO RUINS, buried during Mayon volcano's deadliest eruption in


1814, the Budiao Church ruins are located in Bañadero village

 Just about two kilometers away from the bell tower of Cagsawa Church
are the ruins of the town of Budiao, another place buried by the lava
flow that came from Mayon Volcano that fateful day of February 1, 1814.
Only a very small section of the church protrudes above ground and on
the edge of a village road. The town of Budiao gained popularity during
the Spanish colonization period because it was there that the foreign
colonizers set up an arena for bullfights.

HOYOP HOYOPAN CAVE – CAMALIG, ALBAY
Hoyop Hoyopan Cave

 Hoyop hoyopan cave is located in Camalig, Albay. Hidden within the


mountain jungle, the cave has numerous entrances and exits that make it
like a labyrinth. It has multiple passages that vary from 2-1 0meters in
diameter.

 Derived from the local Bicolano dialect, meaning “to blow” and due to the
good ventilation of air that passes from opening points of the cave, the
word “Hoyop” was given by the locals to this cave, thus becoming Hoyop
Hoyopan Cave.

 Inside the cave are wonderful formations of stalagmites and stalactites, as


well as hidden sacred knowledge of the life of our ancestors — the early
inhabitants of the area.
Naga's Peñafrancia Basilica Minore: The Home of Ina
Peñafrancia Basilica Minore
 Located on the outskirts of Naga City in the province of Camarines
Sur, Peñafrancia Basilica Minore is one of the religious
establishments in the city. It is also where the image of the Our Lady
of Peñafrancia is enshrined.

 This beautiful church in Naga City is steeped in a beautiful story and


a rich history. The Peñafrancia Basilica Minore houses an image of
the Virgin Mary that was sculpted in 1710. It was commissioned by
Dominican priest Miguel Robles de Covarrubias who, as stories
have it, was personally blessed by the Virgin and was witness to
some of her miracles.

 It is the only Basilica in the Bicol Region and the whole Roman
Catholic Archdiocese of Caceres.

(NIPAS):

Sili Ice Cream
Albay’s ice cream collection in First Colonial Grill in Daraga town. With flavors like gabi,
malunggay, and pili, you will notice right away that the selection is not what you’d normally
find in a regular ice cream parlor.
They call it: the fiery sili ice cream, it’s ice cream made from hot chili! With spiciness levels
ranging from one to 10, you can choose to go mild or go all in.
Tilmok
is another famous food from the Bicol region. Tilmok is the Bicolano term for coconut meat.
The other main ingredient of the dish is crab meat.
The preparation of tilmok starts with the mixing of coconut meat and the crab meat
together. Garnishing is added after the meats are mixed. The mixed “meats” are put inside
banana leaves and then steamed. This delicious dish is popular among locals and even
foreigners.
ABACA FESTIVAL (4th week of May)

Coron Festival - August 15-17,
Tiwi, Albay

Coron is a Bicol dialect meaning


clay-pot or potteries of which
the town of Tiwi is popularly
known for. Thus, the festival's
main feature is the
municipalities pottery industry
which is done with skills passed
from parents to children and
perfected through long years of
practice without the benfit of
written manuals. Highlight of the
festival is a Street Presentation.
Pili Festival - June 20-29,
Sorsogon, Sorsogon

 Pili is an indigenous crop of


Bicol region, particularly
Sorsogon. This festival
showcases the Pili, the primary
purpose of which is to
emphasize its importance and
to increase the awareness of
the public on its various
economic uses.
 One way of doing this is
through a street dance
presentation, a highlight of the
festival.
Magayon Festival - May 1-31,
Albay

A festival in the merry month of


May, showcasing Albay as it
comes to age, its cultural
heritage, trade, travel and
tourism beyond Majestic
Mount Mayon. The festival
includes various activity such
as beauty pageant, photo/art
exhibit, street parade, trade

Penafrancia Festival - 3rd Saturday of September,
Naga City

 A religious festival honoring the


feast day of Our Lady of
Penafrancia, Patroness of the
Bicol Region.
 The festivity begins on the
second Friday of September
when the Image of the Virgin of
Penafrancia is carried by
hundreds of male devotees
from her shrine to Naga
Cathedral. Main highlight is the
fluvial procession along the
Naga River
