Electron Microscope

The document discusses the electron microscope. It begins with an introduction describing how electron microscopes use a beam of electrons rather than light to create higher magnification images. It then covers the history, with Ernest Ruska constructing the first electron microscope in 1931. The two main types are transmission electron microscopes and scanning electron microscopes. Applications include scientific research, industry, and forensics. Advantages are higher magnification and potential across many fields, while disadvantages include high costs and sample preparation challenges.

INTRODUCTION
 Electron microscope uses a beam of
electrons to create an image of the specimen.
It has much higher magnification and greater
resolving power.
They are large , expensive and pieces of
equipment , generally standing alone in a small ,
specially designed room and requiring trained
personnel to operate them.
HISTORY

 The physicist
Ernest Ruska
constructed the first
electron microscope
in 1931.
TYPES OF ELECTRON MICROSCOPE
Electron microscopes are of two types:
 Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM)
 Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)

APPLICATIONS OF ELECTRON MICROSCOPE:

 Scientific research: Used to explore the molecular

nature and mechanism of disease , view the 3D
structure of biological tissues and cells , determine
the structure of proteins and observe viruses in a
biological context.
 Industry: Used to assist in developing new
products and throughout the manufacturing process.
 Natural: Used to characterize and analyze organic
materials , which is particularly valuable information
for mining companies.
 Forensic Science: Used to analyze the details of a
relevant specimen.
Advantages of Electron Microscope:
Have higher magnification.
The potential runs the gamut of scientific fields
including biology , medical and forensic sciences ,
metallurgy and nanotechnology.
Also used in many technological and industrial
applications.
Disadvantages of Electron Microscope
They are very costly.
Vibrations and external magnetic fields are very
damaging to it.
Preparation of sample is time consuming and requires
expert training.
Living organisms cannot be studied.
CONCLUSION

From the above discussion we come to

know that the invention of electron
microscope has been a valuable tool in the
development of scientific theory. It has
contributed greatly to biology , medicine and
material sciences.
