Basic Electronic Components

This document discusses basic electronic components. It explains that an electronic circuit is made of components and wires that achieve an outcome like producing a signal or amplifying a signal. The main components are resistors, capacitors, transistors, diodes, and fuses. Resistors oppose current flow, capacitors store energy, transistors amplify signals, diodes allow current in one direction, and fuses protect circuits from overload.

1
Electronic Circuits and Components
An “Electronic Circuit “ is a combination of electronic components
and conductive wires interconnected in a way as to achieve an
outcome: - Achieve a current /voltage of a certain value (signal)
- Amplify a signal
- Transfer data

Input CIRCUIT Output

The purpose of an electronic component is to allow the designer to

control the flow of current as to achieve a specified result/output.
(Resistors, Capacitors, Inductors, Diodes, Transistors )

Electronic Components (cont.)

A. Resistors:

Resistors are passive elements that

oppose/restrict the flow of current.

A voltage is developed across its terminal,

proportional to the current through the resistor.

Electronic Components (cont.)
B. Capacitors
• behave like a tiny rechargeable battery.
(store energy and release it later. )
• are made of two parallel conductors separated by a
dielectric.
• are used for filtering, tuning, separating signals , etc.
• The ability of a capacitor to store charge is called
“Capacitance”
• C = Q/V

Electronic Components (cont.)

Transistors
A transistor is a semiconductor device used to amplify and
switch electronic signals and electrical power.

Electronic Components (cont.)
Diodes are one way valve (or gate) for
electricity. It is a component with an
asymmetrical transfer characteristic. A
diode has low (ideally zero) resistance in
one direction, and high (ideally infinite)
resistance in the other direction.

Fuses are devices that protect the circuit from overload. They
are made of a wire that melts when the current through it
exceeds a specified value.

Robotic Component Functional Summary*
Motors
• Motors are devices that can transform electrical energy into
mechanical energy.
• Control the movement/speed of the robot.
• Direction: CW or CCW.
