Baroque Garden

The Baroque garden style originated in late 16th century Italy and spread to France, with gardens designed around symmetry and imposing order on nature. Baroque gardens were extremely expensive to build and maintain, requiring large staffs and irrigation. They featured geometric patterns, gravel paths and alleys intersecting at fountains and statues. Bushes and trees were sculpted into shapes and water was usually in long ponds or circular ponds with fountains. By the mid-18th century, the style was replaced by more natural English landscape gardens.
