• Plant growth regulators are are chemical
compound that are found naturally in plants.
They ask as plants hormones by causing
certain genes to expressed by plants. They
play a role in regulating the growth of roots,
stems and leaves, and in controlling the
development of fruits and seeds.
• Five growth regulators have been identified,
and their modes of acrion have been
determined. The plant hormone cytokinin acts
to promote cell division ,causes plant cells to
develop into specialized tissues such as roots,
and shoots. Auxin is a plant hormone that
control the elongation or lengthening of cells
• . The presence of auxin stimulates certain
plant genes to be expressed causing growing
plant shoots to lengthen. Gibberellin is a plant
hormone that causes the stored food in seeds
to be converted to plant nutrients. The
nutrients are then available for used during
seed germination and seedling growth.
• The hormone known as abscisic acid acts
in a manner opposing the action of
gibberellin. It prevents seeds from
germinating until they are mature.
Another plant hormone, called ethylene,
is the growth regulator that caused the
fruitd of plants to soften and become
• Growth regulating hormones often act together
to produce entirely different responses from
plats than they act alone. They interaction
between auxin and cytokinin results in the
formation of roots and shoots from plant cells
called callus tissue.
• This is a mass of similar plant cells that have
not specialized into different kinds of pants
tissues. Callus often forms where the injury to
a plant has occurred. Scientist can generate
or grow entire plants from individual cells
contained in callus tissue using a process
know as cells or tissue culture.
• It is know that factors in the environment of a
plant often interact with the plant growth
regulators. The germination of seeds is an
example of interaction between a plant
growth regulator and light. Other plant
function are also known to be related to
interaction between growth regulators and
