6.3 Types of Turnouts

This document discusses types of turnouts used in railways. It defines turnouts as being classified as either left-hand or right-hand, depending on the direction trains divert from the main track. Left-hand turnouts divert trains to the left, while right-hand turnouts divert trains to the right. The document also explains some key parts of turnouts, including switches, lead rails, check rails, and crossings. It provides diagrams to illustrate the working principles of both left-hand and right-hand turnouts.

 Types of Turnouts
 Types – Left Hand and Right
Hand
Types of Turnouts
Turnout Classification:
•Turnouts are classified on the basis of the direction
of movement of the trains from the main track.
• According to the direction of diversion from the
main track, turnouts are classified as under:
1. Left hand turnout – Divert the trail to the left
2. Right hand turnout – Divert the trail to the
right
Some Definitions
Turnout Classification:
•Facing Direction: If someone stands at the toe of the switch,
facing the crossing, then the direction is known as facing
direction.
•Trailing Direction: If someone stands at the crossing and looks
towards the switch, then the direction is known as trailing
direction.
•Facing Points of Turnout: When the train travels from the switch
to the frog, the points are known as facing points of Turnout.
•Trailing Points of Turnout: When the train travels from the
crossing towards the switch, the points are known as trailing
points of Turnout.

Right Hand Turnout
Working Principle of Turnout
Working Principle:
•A pair of points or switches
•Four lead rails (two straight & two curved)
•Two check rails and
•A crossing
Working Principle of Turnout
Pair of switches:
•A pair of points or switches comprises of a Tong rail & Stock
rail
Tong Rail:
•Tapered with toe at one end and heel at the other
•Fixed at heel and move about this point
•On one position (F) it leaves a gap with alignment and in
other (L), toe fits closely against the alignment.
Stock Rail:
•Position of straight alignment against which the tong rail
fits

Working Principle of Left Hand Turnout

Working Principle of Turnout
A Crossing:
•Connected with ordinary rails to permit the two rails to cross
each other
• Check Rail (guard Rail):
• Short piece of rail provided alongside the
main (stock) rail opposite the frog to
guide the wheels and to check the of the
outer wheel to climb over the crossing.
• They ensure that the wheels follow the
appropriate flangeway through the frog
and that the train does not derail.
• Generally, there are two of these for
each frog, one by each outer rail
Working Principle of Turnout
A Crossing:
•Connected with ordinary rails to permit the two rails to cross
each other
Check Rail (guard Rail):
•Short piece of rail provided alongside the main (stock) rail
opposite the frog to guide the wheels and to check the of the
outer wheel to climb over the crossing.
Wing Rails:
•Help in channelizing the wheels to follow the proper route
•Point Rail: Go
•Splice Rail: IO
•Nose of Crossing is a point where the point rail & splice rails
meet
