Elementary Transmission For Transforming Rotary Into Translatory Motion
This document discusses different mechanisms that convert rotary motion into linear or translational motion. It describes five common mechanisms: 1) slider crank mechanism, 2) crank and rocker mechanism, 3) cam mechanism, 4) nut and screw mechanism, and 5) rack and pinion mechanism. For each mechanism, it provides a brief explanation of how it works and examples of applications in machine tools. The document emphasizes that these rotational-to-linear motion conversion mechanisms are important components used in the drive and feed mechanisms of machines that require reciprocating or linear motion.

Elementary Transmission for
Transforming Rotary Into
Translatory Motion ROTARY TO LINEAR
The mechanisms which takes rotary motion and converts it
into translatory motion i.e. Linear motion are used in feed mechanisms of machine tools These are also employed in drive of machine tools having reciprocating cutting motion Types Various mechanisms used this purpose are –
1. Slider crank mechanism
2. Crank & Rocker mechanism 3. Cam mechanism 4. Nut and screw mechanism 5. Rack & pinion mechanism Slider crank mechanism This mechanism consist of a crank, connecting rod and slider. Crank is free to rotate about its one end connected to source of rotary motion. Other end is connected to slider through connecting rod When crank rotates, it pushes connecting rod towards or away from slider giving reciprocating motion to slider The forward & backward strokes takes place during half of revolution of crank The speeds are identical in each stroke. For more productivity, it is desirable to have quick return stroke. Hence this mechanism is used only in machine tools with small stroke. Eg. Gear shaping machine, etc. Crank & Rocker mechanism It consist of crank connected to rocker arm which oscillates about pin jointed end The angle by which stroke takes place is different for forward and reverse stroke. This implies in speed variation in stroke The idle stroke i.e. reverse stroke is faster than the forward stroke The length of stroke can also be varied by adjusting crank radius This type of mechanism is used in machine tools with large stroke Eg. Shaping machines, Slotting machine, etc. Cam mechanism This mechanism consist of a cam and follower. The desired motion can be obtained by giving suitable profile to cam. The profile may be provided on- 1. Periphery of disc 2. Face of disc 3. Cylindrical surface The main advantage of this mechanism is that velocity of operative element is independent of design of driving mechanism. It is controlled by cam profile only This mechanism is costly & requires new set whenever working conditions changes These are generally used in automatic machine tools for mass production Rack & pinion mechanism It consist of a gear and a rack. The gear is stationary which is meshed with rack. When gear rotates, rack executes translatory motion. The direction can be reversed by reversing rotations of pinion It is a simplest & cheapest among all types of mechanism Thank you..!!
