Responsibility on the Net

The Internet has made it possible for us

to connect with each other in meaningful
ways. It has changed how many of us live,
work, and play. Unfortunately, its power
can also be used to spread lies and hate.
Netiquettes for Netizens
Netiquette – is a contraction of words
Internet and etiquette. It refers to the
proper behavior to be observed in
cyberspace.

Here are some examples of
netiquettes:

1. Remember that you are communicating with real

people.

Though you cannot see or have not met them face-

to-face, do not forget that those you are communicating
with online are people just like you. You have to deal
with them as politely as you would a person you have
personally met.
Here are some examples of
netiquettes:

2. Respect other people’s properties.

Do not think that just because you are cyberspace,

you can do whatever you want. If it is inappropriate or
illegal in real life, it is inappropriate or illegal, too, in
cyberspace.
Here are some examples of
netiquettes:

3. Know where you are in cyberspace.

One of the things you will realize as you explore the

web, particularly discussion groups, is that each online
group has its own culture. Read the Frequently Asked
Questions or FAQs before joining a chat room or mailing
list.
Here are some examples of
netiquettes:

4. Keep your messages short and to the point.

Some people pay for Internet access by hour. The

longer it takes to read your messages, the more it may
cost them.

5. Make yourself look good online.

Check your messages for spelling and grammatical

errors. It will probably not matter if an e-mail to a friend
ha a spelling mistake or two, but if you are involved in a
project with other schools, your message represents
not only you but also your school.
Here are some examples of
netiquettes:

6. Share you knowledge.

In cyberspace, you can connect with various

knowledge experts. You can communicate with people
who not only share your interests, but who are also
usually happy to answer your questions.
Here are some examples of
netiquettes:

7. Do not flame others.

Stay calm when you get a rude message. Do not

respond to a flame. A flame is a message that attacks
not just your opinion but also your personality, your
looks, and maybe even your personal habits.
Here are some examples of
netiquettes:

8. Respect other people’s privacy.

You would not want someone to read your e-mails,

so do not read other e-mails, too. If someone sends you
a private e-mail or message, do not forward it to others
without the sender’s permission.
Here are some examples of
netiquettes:

9. Stay safe.

You can make friends in the virtual world just as you

can in the real world, but there are some things you
should be aware of.
People can pretend to be someone they are not on
the Internet. When you meet a new person online, you
need to be careful.
Here are some examples of
netiquettes:
10. Be forgiving of other people’s mistakes.

Inexperienced Internet users are called newbies. But

this does not mean that just because you know what
you are doing, you have earned the right to correct
everyone else.
Do not waste time pointing out people’s errors in
spelling and grammar. Give him or her gentle note in
private rather than a flame message.
