Molarity AND Normality: Danica Alyssa Cruz

The document discusses molarity and normality. [1] Molarity is defined as the number of moles of solute divided by the volume of the solution in liters. [2] Examples are provided for calculating molarity using the number of moles of solute and volume of solution. [3] Normality is defined as the number of grams of the solute divided by the equivalent weight of the solute times the volume of dissolving liquid. [4] Methods for calculating normality from molarity based on number of ions that dissociate from the solute are also described.

MOLARITY
AND
NORMALITY
Danica Alyssa Cruz
Molarity is equal to
the number of moles
of a solute divided
by the volume of the
solution in liters
1. CALCULATE
USING THE
BASE
FORMULA:
What is the
molarity of a
solution
containing 0.75
mol NaCl in 4.2
liters?
MOLARITY 4
2. CALCULATE USING THE
MASS AND VOLUME:
What is the molarity of a
solution made by dissolving
3.4 g of KMnO4 in 5.2 liters
of water?
Find the molar
mass of the
solute.
To calculate the number of moles
from the mass or grams of solute
used, you must first determine the
molar mass of the solute.
This can be done by adding
together the separate molar
masses of each element found in
the solution. Find the molar mass of
each element using the periodic
table of elements.
Make sure that you count the atoms
for each element and calculate the
molar mass of each of the atoms.
7

Now that you have the molar mass of the solute, you
need to multiply the number of grams of solute in the
solution by a conversion factor of 1 mole over the
formula weight (molar mass) of the solute. This will give
you the number of moles of the solute for this equation.

Calculating
Molarity with
Moles and
Milliliters:
What is the molarity
of a solution
containing 1.2 moles
CaCl2 in 2905
milliliters?

Normality is the
number of grams
of the substance
of interest divided
by the equivalent
weight of the
substance times
the amount of
dissolving liquid.
0.15 M HCl The easiest
N = 0.15 X 1 = 0.15 N way to find
1.8 M H2SO4 normality is
N = 1.8 X 2 = 3.6 N from molarity.
2 M NaOH All you need
N = 2 X 1 = 2N to know are
1.2 M Ba(OH)2 how many
N = 1.2 X 2 = 2.4N mole of ions
dissociate.
