• The Great Gatsby is a 1925 novel written by
American author F.Scott Fizgerald. • First published "The Great Gatsby" received mixed reviews and sold poorly. Fizgerald died in 1940 believing himself to be failure and his work forgotten, however the novel experienced a revival during World War II, and became a literary classic. Major characters Nick Carraway •A Yale University graduate and the World War I veteran. He serves as the first-person narrator of the novel. He works as a bond salesman. He is more grounded than the rest of the character of the novel. Jay Gatsby •A young millionaire with shady buisness conections, obsessed with Daisy Buchanan whom he met when he was a young military officer. Daisy Buchanan •Attractive and self-absorbed young Nick's cousin. Before she married Tom Buchanan she had a romantic relationship with Gatsby. Tom Buchanan •Millionaire who lives in East egg, and Daisy's husband. He was a football star at Yale University. He has a romance with Myrtle Wilson- wife of a mechanic and owner of a garage. Jordan Baker An amateur golfer and Daisy Buchanan friend. She is Nick's girlfriend for most of the novel. Plot summary The Great Gatsby is a story told by Nick Carraway, who was once Gatsby's neighbor.As the story opens, Nick is visiting his cousin Daisy Buchanan and her husband. One day Nick and Tom( Daisy's husband) are visiting Tom's mistress Myrtle Wilson. Myrtle calls friends to come over and they spend afternoon drinking at Tom's apartment. After this Nick meets his neighbour Jay Gatsby, who host weekly parties,and they become friends. One day Gatsby appears to be in love with Daisy Buchanan who he met as a young army officer- he bought his house and hosted the elaborate parties in the hopes that she would notice. Than Nick invites Daisy and Gatsby to his house where they meet first time after many years. Plot summary After meeting in Nick's house Gatsby and Daisy's affair begins to grow. On one day they visited city to have a lunch with Tom, Nick and Jordan Baker, where Tom picks up what's going on between his wife and Gatsby. On the way home Tom, Nick and Jordan drives in Gatsby's car and Daisy with Jay drive Tom's coupe. During way home Myrtle Wilson got hit and killed by a passing car driven by Daisy, but Jay confesses he will take all the blame. Next day Wilson (husband of killed Myrtel) sneaks into Jay's house and shoots him and than turns the gun into himself. After Gatsby's death Nick is the only one who showed up on his funeral. The novel ends with Nick how we are all like Gatsby, boats moving up a river, going forward but vontinually feling the pull of the past.
