Strategic Intervention Material: (Equation of A Line)

This document provides guidance on finding the equation of a line given different information. It discusses finding the equation from two points using the two-point form formula: y - y1 = m(x - x1). Examples are provided of finding the equation from two points, from a slope and point, and from intercepts. Practice problems are given to find the equation of lines passing through pairs of points. Assessments include naming lines on a coordinate plane and determining the equation for lines given point pairs.

(equation of a line)
GUIDE CARD
LEAST MASTERED COMPETENCY:
Finding the equation of a line given (a) two points; (b)
slope and a point; (c) the slope and its intercepts.

OBJECTIVES:
 Find the equation of a line given two points on the line.
 Show accuracy in solving .
TITLE CARD

The Equation of a Line can be determined using Two Points on
it by using the Two-Point Form of the Line,

y - = (x - )
where,
is the x coordinate of the first point
is the y coordinate of the first point
is the x coordinate of the second point
is the y coordinate of the second point
 The two points on the
line are (1, 1) and
(3, -2)

  =1
=1
=3
= -2
  y - = (x - )

y – 1= ( x – 1)
  Yehey! We can now substitute values
y – 1 = (x – 1)
in the formula,
y - = (x - ) y–1= x+

y – 1 + (1) = x + + (1)

y= x +

Therefore
  , the equation of the line with points (1, 1) and (3, -2) on it is
y= x + .
Find the equation of the line of the form y = mx + b that passes through
the points (3,4) and (4, 7)
 Solution:

y - = (x - )
y – 4 = ( x – 3) Substitution
y – 4 = ( x – 3)
y – 4 = 1 ( x – 3) Apply Distributive Property of Multiplication
(multiply 1 to the expression inside the parenthesis)

y–4=x–3
y–4+4=x–3+4 Apply Addition Property of Equality
(add 4 to both sides of the equation)

y=x+1 Final Answer

A line passes through the points ( -2, 10 ) and (5, -4). Determine the
equation of the line.
 Solution:

y - = (x - )
y – 10 = ( x – (-2)) Substitution

y – 10 = ( x + 2)
y – 10 = -2 ( x + 2) Apply Distributive Property of
Multiplication
(multiply -2 to the expression inside the parenthesis)

y – 10 = -2x – 4
y – 10 + 10 = -2x – 4 + 10 Apply Addition Property of Equality
(add 10 to both sides of the equation)

y = -2x + 6 Final Answer
