PHILOSOPHY AND

PHILOSOPHIZING
Objectives:
 Explain the true meaning of the word philosopy,
 Demonstrate an appreciation for the value of
philosophizing,
 And practice habitual search for truth in the
practice of their profession.
What is
Philosophy?
PHILOSOPHY
Study of fundamental nature
of knowledge, reality, and
existence, especially when
considered as an academic
discipline.
There are philosophers like Thales,
Anaximander, Heraclitus and more who used
philosophy in search for the answer about the
origin of all things.
There are also philosopher during the medieval
times like St. Thomas, St. Augustine and many
more who have seen the significance of
philosophy for pondering rational explanations
about doctrine of faith
TRADITIONAL
METHOD
Pythagoras 570-504BC
(Etymological definition)
 The word philosophy is from the two
Greek words
philein - Love
And
Sophia – Wisdom
The act of loving is synonymous to searching such that the will is
inclined to acquire the object of his will, which is wisdom. Wisdom
is defined as the good and right practical application of knowledge.
Karl Jasper 1883-1968

Philosophy is a field whereby question is more

important than the answer.

Awareness is a preliminary step before one can make

a significant question. This inquisitive mind will go
deeper in search for that object. Answers can become
new question.
Aristotle
 Itis also mentioned in the traditional way of defining
philosophy, that it is a science that discusses all things
through the use of reason. Only human beings, actually,
can reason out.
Pinon 1973
A science of all things in their ultimate cause through the aid of human
reason alone. It is a science because it is a body of knowledge based on
facts. Everything that is studied by philosophy is supported by evidence.
What is
Philosophizing?
Philosophizing
 Speculate or theorize about fundamental or serious
issues, especially in a tedious or pompous way.

“If you want to fully understand what

philosophy is, learn to practice it”
-Roque Feriols (1979)
Let us try:
Start
wondering about the things around us!
And from wondering, start to question

Some question appear to be meaningless. Yet one can

only begin to philosophize if questions appear to be
meaningful.
What is a meaningful question?

A meaningful question touches the very core of the person; that

question appears to be significant to him; that his whole mind and
body is consumed, busy looking for the answers to this meaningful
question.
Metaphysical
Involvement
Metaphysical involvement can be
measured according to the level of
one’s awareness
Metaphysical
Problem
What is a
Metaphysical?
Metaphysical
It is the branch of philosophy that examines
the fundamental nature of reality, including the
relationship between mind and matter, between
substance and attribute and between
potentiality and actuality.
 This is a problem. But, not a simple problem. Not all problems
are metaphysical problems. And not all situation will lead one to
metaphysical involvement.

 The word “Problem” comes from “Pros” and “ballos”.

Pros- thrown before
Ballos- a ball

A ball thrown before you can be manipulated the way you want
it. You can dribble that ball, throw that ball, spin that ball, or do
whatever you want from that ball.
Example:
a. Metaphysical Situation :
The experience of a dying
relative. One can hardly accept that
he will soon depart from life.

Metaphysical Problem :
What is the point of loving
someone when it will just end in
death?
Example:
b. Metaphysical Situation :
The suffering of a dying friend
because of AIDS.

Metaphysical Problem :
What is the reason for living
when soon death appears after a
year or two?
Example:
c. Metaphysical Situation :
The experience of someone after
knowing that he is only an adopted
child.

Metaphysical Problem :
Who are my true parents? Why did I
grow up in the custody of other people?
Example:
d. Metaphysical Situation :
The experience of someone close to
death?

Metaphysical Problem :
Is there God? Is there life eternal?
Example:
e. Metaphysical Situation :
The experience of a troubled
expectant mother who happens to be a
victim of rape.

Metaphysical Problem :
How will I cope up my life after
giving birth to this unwanted child?
Example:
f. Metaphysical Situation :
The experience of a troubled
child after his parents parted ways

Metaphysical Problem :
How will I face life? I cannot
live alone but who will take me?
Example:
g. Metaphysical Situation :
The experience of a troubled son whose
father has been kidnapped in Iraq for a
ransom. Failure to comply would mean
decapitation

Metaphysical Problem :
How can I help my father?
Example:
h. Metaphysical Situation :
The personal experience of a person being
kidnapped by a hostage for-ransom group.

Metaphysical Problem :
Of all people, why me? Shall I die? What
will happen to my family if I die? Will there
be someone to save me?
Example:
i. Metaphysical Situation :
The experience of a father whose child is
being kidnapped.

Metaphysical Problem :
How can I save my child? I don’t have
much money that they need.
Example: j. Metaphysical Situation :
The experience of a sorrowful mother who
does not have something to eat for her crying
and hungry child.

Metaphysical Problem :
For 2 days we missed meals. What shall I
do? Will there be someone to help us? Until
when should we suffer like this?
The Light
Everybody knows that for every question, there is always a
corresponding answer. Yet, truth remains that there are some
questions that remain unsolved, no answer whatsoever. In the
field of philosophy, there are situation where man is confronted
with no assurance of right answer.

Metaphysical question are indeed Hard to solve because

they are beyond the real of our senses. Sometimes answer will
take you months or years before you have it. The Mind is very
limited to comprehend the mystery of life.
How to find this ‘light’?
One can avail it through deep and through
reflection. Reflection is a way of looking into
our own minds and affirming what we there
have discovered.
Example:
Some suggested ways to find the light.

Saying
This study does not show that human
existence as such is meaningful.
Instead it shows the fact of the human
quest towards finding and realizing the
meaning of human existence.
Some suggested ways to find the light.

Parables
Another meaningful way of
philosophizing is using parables.
When one reflects and ponders about
the things, one will notice a series of
pictures flash into his mind.
