This document contains solutions to two mechanical engineering problems involving shaft power calculations. Problem 15 calculates the power of a 50mm diameter main shaft running at 300 rpm as 120 hp. Problem 16 finds the diameter of a short shaft connected to a 40in pulley by a 12in pulley on the main shaft running at 600 rpm, calculating it as 2.250617115 inches using formulas for power transmission through pulleys and a 90% efficient belt.

PROBLEM 15. A main shaft has 50 mm diameter is running at 300 rpm. What is the power that
could be deliver by the shaft.

Given: Diagram:
D= 50 mm
N = 300 rpm

50 mm
Required:
Power deliver by the shaft (P)

Solution:
Since there is no given Pressure (p), and the problem said that it is a main shaft
For main shaft the allowable stress (S)= 4000 psi

We use the formula,

Answer:
PROBLEM 16. A 2 inches diameter main shaft running at 600 rpm is mounted by a 12 inches
diameter pulley and is then connected to the shaft of driven machine mounted by a 40
inches diameter pulley by means of a belt. The belt efficiency is 90%. Find the diameter
of the short shaft.
40in

Given: Diagram:
PULLEY 1(Main Shaft) D
Dshaft=2 in
Dpulley=12 in
N=600 rpm
12in
PULLEY 2(Short Shaft)
Dpulley=40 PULLEY 2
2in
Belt efficiency e=90%
Required:
Diameter of the short shaft PULLEY 1

Solution:
To solve for the diameter of the shaft we use the formula of main shaft for pulley 1.

Substitute the given, we have

2in)^3] (600rpm)/ 80
60hp

To get the Power of the short shaft, use the belt efficiency

,,

Solution:
Solve for the N2, we use the formula

(600rpm)(12in)=

Solving for the diameter of the short shaft of Pulley 2,

54hp=
D2.250617115 in

Answer: 2.250617115 in
