Rizal and Viola

Rizal and Viola took a grand tour of Europe in 1887, visiting museums, cities, and historic places. They traveled from Dresden to Teschen and Leitmeritz, where they stayed with Ferdinand Blumentritt. Rizal’s Grand Tour with

Maximo Viola (1887)

On their last night in Leitmeritz, Rizal
and Viola to reciprocate Bulementritt’s
hospitality, tendered a banquet, a
farewell dinner, in his honor at their
hotel.
Rizal, desiring to commemorate his
happy hours at the Blumentritt
home, painted a portrait of the
kind professor as a sign of his
gratitude and gave it to him.
Blumentritt was pleased with the
gift.
Where they carried a
recommendation from Blumentritt.
