What is a Stool or Feces?

 Human feces is called as STOOL.


 Faeces / Feces is plural. It has a latin term
“faex”meaning RESIDUE.
 It is the waste residue of indigestible materials of
an nimal’s digestive tract expelled through the
anus during defecation.
 Meconium is newborn’s first feces.
 SCATOLOGY or CAPROLOGY is the study of feces.
Collection and Handling of Stool Sample
1. Collect fresh, diarrheal stool in a clean, dry bedpan or on a
plastic, leak proof container.
2. Portions of stool containing blood and mucus must be
transferred into the containers.
3. Sample must be 3-5 grams or thumb size.
4. Specimen should not be contaminated with urine or toilet
water that may contain chemicals
5. Label specimen with patient’s full name, date and time of
collection.
Fecal Sample Examination
1. Macroscopic Examination
 Color  Abnormal Features
 Consistency  Adult Worm or Segment
2. Macroscopic Examination
 WBC/ HPF  Yeast
 RBC/ HPF  Cyst, trophozoite, or both
 Mucus  Larvae, egg, or both
3. Chemical Examination
 Fecal fatty acid testing  Fecal PH test
 Testing feces for Occult Blood Stool reducing substances
testing
General Rejection Criteria

1. Unlabelled Specimens
2. Incorrectly Labelled (Mislabelled) Specimens
3. Incorrect Container or Preservative
4. Insufficient Specimen for Procedure(s)
5. Unsuitable Specimen for Procedure(s)
Time Constraints and Exceptions for Delivery and
Processing of Specimen

1. Sample must be submitted1 hour after collection


2. Turn Around Time ( upon receipt of the laboratory)
STAT: Within 2 hours
Routine: within 4 hours
