VOICES OF THE VERB

Active Voice and Passive Voice


OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the student must:
• identify the voices of the verb;
• differentiate active from passive voice; and
• transform active to passive and vice versa.
ACTIVE VOICE
• The subject is the “doer” of the action.

• Sentences in the active voice have a strong, direct,


and clear tone.

• [Subject doing action] + [verb] + [Object receiving


action]
EXAMPLES OF ACTIVE VOICE

•Monkeys adore bananas.


•The cashier counted the money.
•The dog chased the squirrel.
PASSIVE VOICE
• The subject receives the action.

• The subject is acted on by the verb.

• Use the preposition “by”.

• [Subject receiving action] + [be] + [past


participle of verb] + [by] + [Object doing action]
EXAMPLES OF PASSIVE
VOICE
• Bananas are adored by monkeys.

• The money was counted by the cashier.

• The squirrel was chased by the dog.
