Importance of Robotics
Making Life Easier
Boost Economy
ROBOTS
The robot arms are extremely
precise.
Mission: Mars
 Assembly line robots that are programmed to build cars by placing
parts in exactly the same place every time are no longer tech
cool. Assembly line robots with laser eyes that can see where parts
need to go, adjust themselves to even the slightest variations in
positioning, and custom fit each placement.
But, what exactly is a robot?
 Contains sensors, control systems, manipulators,
power supply, and software all as one.
 Physics, mechanical engineering, electrical
engineering, structural engineering, mathematics and
computing.
 Some, biology, medicine and chemistry.
Essential Characteristics

 Sensing  -all robot would have to be able to sense its

surroundings.
 Movement - A robot needs to be able to move around
its environment.
 Energy - A robot needs to be able to power itself.
 Intelligence A robot needs some kind of "smarts."
Robots learning about their
environment

 Cameras
 Global Positioning System (GPS)
 Laser rangefinders
 Light sensors
 Temperature sensors
 Touch sensors
Robots in the future
What makes it difficult?
 Computer processors keep getting faster and faster—
roughly doubling every eighteen months.

~ Gordon E. Moore
Computers act only as its brain
Not its body structure
Size and Mass
“If you move an arm with half the force, you only get
half the result, which means, for example, that you
can’t miniaturize a robot arm and expect it to lift the
same heavy objects.”

~ Rodney Brooks
Energy source
Function
Robot designs today
only supports
limited function
It is quite impossible to build an iron man suit.
Robotics Design Process
Defining the Problem

 identifying the purpose of a construction

 identifying specific requirements

Researching and Designing

 gathering information
 identifying specific details of the design which must
be satisfied
 identifying possible and alternative design solutions
 planning and designing a appropriate structure which
includes drawings
Gathering Information

 What is the practical function of the design?

 What part does appearance play in the design’s
function?
 What materials are suitable for the design?
 What construction methods are appropriate to the
design?
 What are the likely social and environmental effects
of the design?
Creating a Prototype

 testing the design

 troubleshooting the design

Building your Robot . .
Programming and Testing your Robot
Evaluating your Robot

 evaluate the design

 evaluate the planning process

 How well does the design function?
 Does the design look good?
 Is the product safe to use?
 Did I plan my work adequately?
 Did I find the construction straightforward or difficult?
 Were the most suitable materials used?
 Did it cost more or less than expected?
 How could I have improved my design?
