Fonts and colours explained

How colour and font communicates to an audience

Serif fonts

Serif fonts are conventional

and have a traditional style to
them with different weight
lines in each letter and accents
on the tips. However Sans
Serif is more of a modern style
without any added flare to
each letter with just plain
edges and corners
Script fonts

Script fonts are elegant, the

letters are often joined up and
exaggerated, the style is as if it
was handwritten by an ink
pen. They are often used on
regal and glamorous events
such as a diploma or a
wedding invitation
Display fonts

Display fonts are Handwritten fonts are quite literally as if they have
designed to be been drawn with a pen. They vary in weights and

Sizing and capital letters

• Size usually indicates importance

• Mastheads or artist logos/display font of their name on magazines are often the largest feature on the
front cover
• Magazine masthead names will often be in bold thick capital letters (especially indie magazines)
• The bigger the font size is the more of a focal point it is and the more attention from the audience it
initially gets
• The masthead is often at the top /top right

Colours

Colours are important in attracting the target audiences and conveying subtle messages on magazine covers
and other media texts. They are often paired with colours that contrast them and don’t clash so you can read
them clearly.

• Red – power/passion/excitement/energy /danger

love/lust/boldness
• Orange – warmth/success/autumn
• Yellow – positivity/happiness/cheerful
• Green – health/success/nature/money
• Blue – tranquility/peace/cold/masculinity/sombre
• Purple – royalty/luxury/wisdom/spirituality
• Pink – femininity/love/childish/playful
Colours on magazines

In magazines the font colour pallet on the front page is often limited to 3 colours which match each other
and contrast well together

Magazines will choose colours to appeal to their target audience

and catch their attention more than others outside the target. For
example children's magazines will have bright colours of all
kinds ,but mainly pink and blue (depending on the gender its
targeting) to draw in attention.

However those magazines with an

older audience will have a much
more reserved and subtle colour
pallet with conventionally 3
dominant colours in the image and
fonts on the front page
