Numbering of Containers

The container numbering system allows containers to be properly identified through an 11-digit alphanumeric code assigned by BIC. The first three letters identify the container owner, while the next six digits can be numeric or include letters. The last two characters serve as an identifier. This coding system, along with other markings, helps ensure safe transport of containers and awareness of any hazards they may contain.

Introduction

The container, as the main tool for

maritime transport, has presented in
recent years an unstoppable growth
and, therefore, for the improvement
of management have been created
control systems, including container
coding.
Identification of containers

 It is done through a combination of 11-digit

alphanumeric according to ISO 6346 and ISO
2716.
 BIC (International Office for Containers and
Intermodal Transport), which assigns a code for
each operating company.

• This institution, based in Paris, France, provides

each container with a code. The coding system
consists of several codes that allow to know,
among other details, the country of origin of the
container, the owner and the type of container.

• With all these data it is possible to obtain the

necessary information for the correct transport of
the containers, rigor information for all transport
and logistics. In addition, containers often carry
inscription marks on the back and can carry
dangerous merchandise.
