What is the World Wide
Web?
•The World Wide Web (www) is a
group of web pages. The web pages
are joined together to make a web of
information that anyone in the world
can see. Facts, pictures, videos, and
games are just a few of the things on
the WWW.
How are the Web pages joined
together?
•The Web pages are joined together
by hyperlinks. A hyperlink is a
spot on the web page that when
clicked will display a web page.
Why do you think the World
Wide Web is called “Web” for
short?

Wide Web you need special
software called a Web browser.
Two kinds of Web browsers are

the hyperlink is clicked the computer
gets the web page from its address on
the Internet.
What is URL?
•The address bar is at the top of
the Web browser window. It
shows the URL or Web page
address.

•The URL begins with http. It


stands for hypertext transfer
protocol. It tells the Web browser
you want to see a file on the
Internet.

What is Domain?

•After http://www comes the


domain. A domain is the
registered name of the website.
Types of Domain Names
•.com – commercial
•.gov – government
•.edu – education
•.net – network
•.org – organization
•.us or .ca – country name
• Sometimes there is a path name after the
domain. The pathname may have the
name of the HTML document. It may also
have a folder name. For example:
http://www.domain.com/
folder/file.html
• If there is nothing after the domain, then it
means the web browser is displaying the
default HTML document. It is usually
called index.html

Direction: Type the URL into the address bar
• Click the mouse in the address bar.

opens.
