Resource allocation
• Resource allocation is one of the more complex
aspects of project management and is critical in
creating and leading a high-performing project team.
• Resource allocation is an ongoing process that must
be constantly fine-tuned over the duration of the
project.
• Resource allocation is both a project management
process and a portfolio management function.
Resource allocation
• Resource allocation is the
process of assigning and
scheduling available
organizational resources in
the most effective and
economical manner.
• The task of the project
manager is to determine the
proper timing and sequencing
of those resources within the
scope of the project
schedule.
Why Resource Allocation Is Important
• Resource allocation involves carefully allocating a
range of financial, human, natural and material
resources against the needs of the project.
• These requirements can be expected to evolve over
the duration of the project as the project moves
progressively through its project lifecycle.
• By carefully utilizing these resources absolutely
required at each stage of the project, the project
manager can avoid tying up resources unnecessary.
Why Resource Allocation Is Important
Resource leveling
• Resource leveling is the smoothening of resource
usage to increase project efficiency.
• It is performed to realize a trade off between project
duration and project cost.
• "A technique in which start and finish dates are
adjusted based on resource constraints with the goal
of balancing demand for resources with the available
supply."
Resource leveling
• It can also be used to balance the workload of
primary resources over the course of the project.
• Resource Leveling, is a technique that avoids over-
allocation. Resources are taken from non-critical
activities and allocated to critical activities. However,
while leveling ensures that resources are not
overestimated, avoiding spikes, the method typically
increases project time. Therefore, cost and time
analysis should be done before leveling and
rechecked after applying the method.
