What is Dowry System ?
Dowry means gifts given by the girl’s parents at the time of marriage . This is the symbol of love and respect. It is the help of the girl so that she may set up her home . But with the passage of time, the sense of dowry has changed. It has now become a social evil. When & How did the Dowry System Start ?
We can date the history of dowry as far
back as 1700 BC. In ancient times, a dowry was given to the groom and his family in exchange for the bride as a way of ensuring that she is properly taken care of. For financial security in case of widowhood and was thought to eventually provide for the couple’s future children as well. What are the Problems of Dowry? • Dowry deaths number have not decreased as compare to previous years. • Indian Government has introduced so many laws to stop dowry system yet the people have not changed. • Over 90% of government employees actively seek and get a dowry from their bride’s family. • Marriage is private affair but now a days slowly and slowly becoming a social programme, • Expenditure on marriage have a become prestige Issue. Causes of Dowry • Poverty is the main causes behind dowry . • Because of the illiteracy, most the people are unaware of effect of dowry. • Narrow mentality behind the dowry system. • Negative attitude towards the women. • Lack of women education in families is the reason for giving dowry. • Because of dependency women become a burden in a family and they give dowry. bride’s family- In Poor families sometimes the father of an young bride had to take loan from the bank to pay the demand of a groom . • Dowry system makes imbalance in sex ratio- parent of poor families kill their daughter from their vary birth . • Sometimes brides commit suicide. • Increases corrupt attitude of parents. Religious Perspective Of Dowry HINDUISM • Dowry(dahej)is paid in cash and gifts by the bride’s family to the groom’s family along with the giving away of the bride, • The ritual of kanya-dana is an essential aspect in Hindu marital rites; kanya=daughter, dana=gift. • The figure of deaths in
India due to non payment of dowry could placed around seven thousand in one year. • The increase in incidents of dowry offences in evident form the fact that against 8233 cases of dowry deaths in the country in 2012,7621 cases were reported in 2016. Records as Per NCRB
• As per national crime records bureau
data, the country has recorded more than 6700 cases of cruelty by husband or by his relative. • Uttar Pradesh tops the chart with 2473 such cases in past few year, followed by Bihar(987) and Madhya Pradesh (629). • Lowest record of dowry was recorded in Assam (157) INDIA’S LAWS AND ACTS AGAINST DOWRY SYSTEM Payment of dowry or gifts in any form are prohibited under the following acts:- • Dowry prohibition act,1961 • Indian penal code(IPC)sec:304B & 498a. • Dowry and bridal gift restriction rules,1985 • Protection of women from Domestic Violence act, 2005 Law in Detail Dowry Prohibition Act,1961 In 1961,the Government of India passed the Dowry Prohibition Act , making the Dowry demands in wedding arrangements illegal in 1985, the Dowry prohibition rules were framed.
IPC Section 498-A
States, that whoever being the husband or relative of the husband of woman ,subjects such woman to cruelty shall be punished with the imprisonment for a term which may extend top three years and also be liable to fine Important Steps to Eradicate Dowry
• People should not attend such Marriages.
• Girls should refuse to Marry Boys who ask for dowry. • Dowry Act should be made a non –Bailable crime. • NGOs should take some strict action against the Dowry taker. • Police should file complaint against dowry victim and should take immediate action. THANK YOU……
