• Primarily, the Romantic Movement was an intellectual, artistic,
and literary movement that started in the second half of the 18th
century in Europe.
• People at that time were rebelling against social and political
standards of the Classical Period. They believed in expressing
their imaginations and passion and in expressing it in their
artwork like literatures, arts, education, and music.
• People in this period moved away from the standards of
balance and restraint prominent during the Classical Period;
allowing artistic freedom and experimentation.
Characteristic Features of Instrumental
Romantic Music
• These characteristics include themes that focused on national identity, surrender
to nature, the mystic and supernatural, a longing for the infinite, the strange and
surprising, spiritual experiences, and subjectivism.
• Romanticism cherishes freedom, movement, passion, and endless pursuit of the
unattainable Romantic music is “understood” to be more passionate and
expressive.
• Romantic music attempted to increase emotional expression and power to
describe deeper truths of human feelings.
• Orchestra instruments was expanded greatly to include piccolo, English horn,
contrabassoon, bass clarinets, trombone, tuba, harp, and a steadily growing list of
percussion.
• Mostly contained warm, personal melodies.

Frederic Chopin
• considered as Poland’s greatest composer
• he focused his efforts in composing music for piano
and had a strong influence on composers who
followed him
• performed several concerts across Europe and Asia
and became a popular composer and pianist
however, he suffered from poor health which made
him appear less in public than expected
• He never got tired in discovering colorful,
expressive, and new passage works and technical
figures. He made great contributions towards the
development of music and left a significant impact
upon the lives of many piano players of the modern
era.
Pyotr (Peter) Ilich Tchaikovsky
• A romantic Russian musician who produced
various kinds of compositions that include
operas, ballets, concertos, chamber music,
and symphonies.
• His music is characterized by beautiful
melodies and creative orchestration.
• He displayed exceptional musical ability
from an early age, improvising at the piano
and composing his first song in 1844, aged
four.
Franz Liszt
• Hungarian pianist who at age 6 was a
renowned child prodigy.
• As a boy, he played for musicians and kings
mainly because of his extraordinary ability to
improvise an original composition.
• His popularity increased because he donated
concert proceeds to charity and
humanitarian causes.
• He became known for his symphonic poem,
which is actually a type of musical piece that
illustrates a poem, a story, or a non-musical
source.
Charles-Camille Saint-Saens
• An organist, conductor, pianist, and
composer of the Romantic period
• He wrote music belonging to various
genres like symphony, concerto, opera,
solo piano, chamber music, and secular
piano music
• He helped revive a number of earlier
dance forms like the buoree and gavotte.
