pronouns (who, which. Other than
whose, when, who, whom, and
etc.). which can’t be
reduced (when &
where).
THE RULES OF REDUCED RELATIVE CLAUSE
The relative pronouns using who or which followed by
verbs.(Omit the word who / which and the verbs are changed
into Verb1 + Ing.)

Examples:
o The man who works in Surabaya lives in Sidoarjo.
The man working in Surabaya lives in Sidoarjo.
o The boy who brings the torch is my brother.
The boy bringing the torch is my brother.
o The dog which barked very loudly yesterday annoyed me.
The dog barking very loudly yesterday annoyed me.
EXCEPTION
a. You cannot omit who or which if it is followed by the verb: like,
hate, enjoy, love, prefer.
Examples:
• The girl who enjoys the movie is my little sister.
The girl enjoying the movie is my little sister

b. When the verb “have” meaning possession, we can omit relative


pronoun and “have” and use with(+) or without(-).
Example:
• Students who have enough math and English skills will be admitted.
Students with enough math and English skills will be admitted.

• People who don’t have their ID cards can not get in.
People without their ID cards can not get in.
The relative pronouns used is who/which followed by to
be+ preposition(Omit the word who/which and to be).

Examples:
o The spider which is on the ceiling is looking at me.
The spider on the ceiling is looking at me.
o I met a woman who was from my village when the winner
was announced.
I met a woman from my village when the winner
was announced.
o The dog which is in the cage often escapes.
The dog in the cage often escapes. NOTE
EXCEPTION
“You cannot omit who or which and to be if the sentence
is followed by adjective”, except available & (im)possible

Examples:
• Please book the tickets which are available.
Please book the tickets available
• The children who were happy played until nine in the
evening. 
The children happy played until nine in the
evening. 
NOTE

CAN YOU REDUCE THE SENTENCE?

NOTE
The relative pronouns use who / which followed by Passive
Form. (Omit the word who / which and to be.)

Examples:
o The thief who was put in the jail stole a lot of
things.
The thief put in the jail stole a lot of things.
o This survey which had been conducted by the
government didn’t indicate true public opinion.
This survey conducted by the government didn’t
indicate true public opinion.
The relative pronouns use whom / which followed by
Subject. (Omit the word whom /which.)

Examples:
o I have sent the letter to the girl whom I met at the
market.
I have sent the letter to the girl I met at the
market.
o The car which my father bought has a new style.
The car my father bought has a new style.
EXERCISE
Reduce these sentences if possible. If the sentence can’t be reduced, just write No Change

1. Chef Juna scolded the contestants who cooked the dish badly.
2. The topic which Omar talked about was interesting.
3. 1945 is an important year when Indonesia got its independence.
4. The people whom I spoke to were friendly.
5. The dog which was very happy to see its owner again barked loudly.
