Nurse Patient Interaction (NPI)

The document discusses nurse-patient interaction (NPI), which is a planned, therapeutic relationship that focuses on the patient's needs, feelings, and ideas. Key components of NPI include self-assessment, establishing rapport and trust, empathy, respect, caring, and patience. There are three phases to NPI: orientation, working, and termination. The orientation phase involves goal-setting, assessment, and establishing a therapeutic environment. In the working phase, the nurse helps the patient explore issues and develop coping strategies. The termination phase focuses on evaluation and ensuring the patient can cope independently. Potential "stalls" in the therapeutic process include judgmental attitudes and failure to set clear goals.
