Mnemonics: Iqra Akram PHD Education Presented To: DR Asma Shahid Kazi

Mnemonics are memory tools that use meaningful associations to improve recall of information. They encode simple information in visual or acoustic ways using all the senses. Common mnemonic techniques include acronyms, acrostics, the loci method, and pegwords. Teachers can use mnemonics to help students remember lists, concepts, and procedures. Advance organizers and graphic organizers also help students organize complex information by providing visual structures like outlines, tables, and charts before learning new material. Metacognition strategies like self-assessment and goal-setting can further improve student learning.

Mnemonics

IQRA AKRAM
PhD Education
Presented to:
Dr Asma Shahid Kazi
Mnemonics
 Strategies to improve memory by encoding simple

information in meaningful ways.

 A weird word that means “memory tool”.

Mnemonics are methods for remembering

information that is otherwise difficult to recall.

Mnemonics use as many of the best functions of

your brain as possible to store information.

 Mnemonics are used to encode simple
information (e.g., lists of words, procedures,
formulas) in meaningful ways.
 Mnemonics can be used by teachers in school to
help students remember and learn lists, words,
concepts that are otherwise difficult to remember
and recall. • They are also used by all of us in
our daily lives.
Researchers say:

We r
e m em

We r ber 2
e m e 0% o

We r mber f wh
e me m 50 % a t we
b er 7 of w hear;
5-80 hat w
% of e r ea
what d;
we s
ee a n
d do .

By using all your senses, but especially your ability to

create visual ability, you can increase your power to
memorize.
Kinds of Mnemonics:
Acronyms:
An acronym is a word or phrase made by using the
first letter of key words in a list of items to remember. It is also
used to remember factual information
Example:
What’s an easy way to remember the steps needed to
treat an injury? RICE: Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation
Kinds of Mnemonics:

Acrostics:

An acrostic is a sentence made by using the first letter of key words

in a list of items to remember.

Example:

Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally = parentheses, exponents,

multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction (represents the order of
operations in math problems)
Kinds of Mnemonics:

The Loci Method:

The loci method is a mnemonic technique that
involves associating items or topics with specific rooms in a familiar
building.

The word loci comes from Latin and means “place.”

How to use it

 Choose a familiar place

 Picture each item in the place.

When to use it

 Simple information

 Easy to remember maps

 Difficult to use more than once

Remembering the Bones of the Skull

"Old People From Texas Eat Spiders"

Pegword Method
•Uses something you know (and won’t forget) to “hang” new information on.

•Pairs old information with new information in a visual format.

•Good for remembering items in order.

•Common pegs: the alphabet; numbers; furniture in your house

Help Students Organize Complex
Information
 Advance Organizers

 help to encode new information.

 Can be simple as an outline.

 an organizational structure that is provided before students are asked to

learn new complex information

 Examples: heading, outlines, tables, charts etc

Characteristics of Advance Organizers

 Brief

 Written

 Presented in advance of the main body of material to be learned.

 include a higher level of abstraction than students’ current level of cognition

(Hinson, 1988)
Graphic Organizers

 Graphic organizers convert verbal information into a structured visual display that

shows at a glance the key parts of the whole and their relations.
Uses of tables

 What they know

 What they want to know

 What they learned

 Examples: mind maps, knowledge maps, diagrams, charts, matrices,

flowcharts and tables

Encourage Metacognition

 Teachers should provide specific criteria to help students self-assess their

performance and teach a repertoire of strategies that can be used to improve

learning.

 Help students in set, monitor and evaluate their goals.

 Teach metacognitive strategies.

 Encourage and support self-regulation.
